Question 1: He has insurance through USAA, is there a certain amount they will cover up to before totaling the car?

Yes, the replacement value of the car is the max they should shell out for repairs. USAA is head and shoulders better than other auto carriers for claims repair. That said, take it to your shop not their shop.

Question 2: Will they just get an estimate of the damage and cut me a check or can I take it to a Toyota dealership (no lexus in town) and get them to give an estimate?

Not sure. USAA has pre-authorized shops where you take the car in and they pay but the shop works for them and not you.

Question 3: What is the best route possible to take?

Find a good independent shop yourself and get a quote. Make no mention about insurance. Then get a quote from the Lexus dealer

Question 4: Is there anything I should know or that I'm missing?

Make sure there is no frame damage. Make sure they use OEM components (try and get new one, not junkyard and refurbs). Ask your repair guy for the old parts.

usually if the damaged exceeds 75% of the total book value of the car it's considered totaled
