Default Time for a New Car, Look At This GS400, opinions?

I used to have a 97 ES300 but it was totaled in an accident. Therefore, I have away from the boards for a long time. I need to get another car and want to go back to Lexus. I found this 99 GS400...

It looks very nice but the miles (184K) concern me. What are your opinions on the asking price and the high miles? I know it really depends on routine maintenance but are these cars (engines, trannys, electrical, HVAC, etc) pretty much bullet proof like other Lexus'?

Thanks for the opinions, I appreciate it.

Man, that's a lot of miles. Always go for less miles over less years. Check out cars.com and autotrader.com Ebay can sometimes have a good deal. CL Classifieds are good too and you get the jump on some mods already installed usually.

ok, thanks for the opinions, I will look elsewhere. I have been searching CL, Autotrader, Car Soup, Ebay, etc for weeks now. Either the sellers won't ever return my calls/emails or prices are just too high.

I am also looking at this...probably going to check it out tomorrow, he said he will go down to $6K.

Two issues with the GS400

1) The 400 puts down a lot of RWD power and it's heavy. I wouldn't run a GS without snow tires in MN

2) Miles / rust. Need to do a thorough inspection of the underbody and exhaust.

That's way too many miles on the GS and I wouldn't suggest an ES GL

What would you suggest? I want to stay around $6,000. I looked at the ES and the check engine light was on, didn't have the 90k service (had original water pump, timing belt and tensioner). I will keep looking I guess. Curious why you wouldn't suggest and ES?

Thanks

any car after 100k miles requires extensive maintance. Like timing belt, water pump, radiator, shocks, control arms.

I was told that once you get these maintence factors addressed (as long as there weren't any prexisting issues), then a GS400 can run you into 250k+ np.

Most members here that seem to have reported in are seeing mileage close to 225-250k+. From what I know, Toyota V8's are just as bulletproof...here's hoping cuz I recently got a 99 GS400 with 150k, but it starts up and runs like it's got 50k on it. I need the maintenence, like timing belt, water pump, new tires, control arms, etc., but overall the car runs like a champ. Until I installed a new battery in backwards and fried my fuses....it's at the dealer now getting fixed up...so hopefully it will be just as good as before.

Too bad it isn't a 400 though, are the 300's pretty peppy?

I love the GS in black....but if you're looking for power, then stick with the V8. I shopped around for a GS300 too cuz I thought it would be cheap enough to be worth it, but for an extra 17/month in insurance, the extra power was totally worth it. I mean, the 300 is not a slouch, it's just that you can really tell it's a heavy car.

I decided on the GS400 when I got in the driver's seat, and pulled it out of the dealer lot. It was still heavy, but man did it move! Matter of fact, compared to the 2010 RX350 loaner we have right now (while the dealer fixes my idiot reverse battery installation issue), the GS400 is a rocket! I know the new 3.5 they have in there are more refined and all, but our 99GS400 with 150k sounded almost as quiet as the brand new RX350 loaner with 9800miles, but has torque like a ****!

I'm in the Twin Cities. I have a GS400 for sale. But it's more than 6k.
