Loud grinding coming from back wheel
I'm getting this loud grinding noise that is coming from my back wheel. It was only happening when i applied the brakes, but now it's a constant noise. Sounds like metel grinding against something. A friend of mine told me that it could be my rotors, but Lexus just replaced them about 6 months ago. How long do rotors usually last before having to replace them? Please help.
what about your brake pads??? did they replace those? with my mom's benz, they didnt replace the pads but replaced the rotors... had to change them out last week... if your pads are worn and are going metal to metal with the rotors, you will have to resurface the rotors.... have them check the pads...

hmm..the only other thing that I could think of that would make such a grinding noise would be the bearings.... how old is the car? is it still under warranty??? have Lexus re-check the rotors and brake pads (that should at least be under warranty since they just replaced those).
Now if it is the bearings... get them replaced.. dont Repack them. repacking costs about maybe a hundred dollars less than getting in new ones (at least that's how much it cost here). and the new ones will last longer.

Thanks.....
Dazz, I'll poke my nose in here just cause I happened to read your post, but babyGS will likely say the same thing.........as far as warranty, it depends. Some dealers are far more mod-friendly than others. But regardless, if you have modded a system which then, for some reason, has a failure, many dealers are assigning fault to the mods (since warranty reimbursement doesn't pay as well as collecting from the owner; call me cynical) and expecting you to pay to fix it.
So, if it's brakes, you are probably ok (lesson for future: I would NOT ignore grinding ANYTIME, much less everytime, I applied the brakes without having things looked into as quickly as possible) from warranty standpoint. If a bearing, with rims and lowering, then the ground is more shaky. But you've got to get it fixed either way.

Had the same thing happen to me. They probably only replaced the front Pads. On 2001 GS430 the brake pads wear evenly. If you do lots of fast starts VSC will make the rear pads wear even faster. You will need new rear rotors. Most dealers are not aware that the front & rear brake pads wear about the same on the newer GS.
