Default 2000 GS300 whine/vibration from power steering pump

Whining seems to a start shortly after driving, but it will stop when I turn the wheels from side to side. The pump fluid looks fine. Mechanic suggests flushing and refilling for $125. If not and it gets worse, I may need to replace pump. He first thought it may be a belt, but after checking the noise at idle and finding it disappeared when turning the wheel side to side, he thinks its is the pump. Seems like if it is, I should not spend 125 to flush and fill the old one first.

My car has been fantastic and had everything scheduled done. It has 108K at this point.

Has anyone had a similar problem??

you sure the fluid is fine?

usually itll make noise when its low on fluid (ATF) OR theres a leak in the PS pump.

if the fluid is topped off correnctly n it STILL makes wierd noises.. then something is wrong.. if you notice that the fluid decreases over several days then theres a leak. why not drain n fill it yourself for $20??

but yea check the fluids and check for signs of leaks.

Edit: does the fluid get bubbly when it makes the sounds??

Did your scheduled maintenace already include changing the PS Fluid before? If not, it's worth changing.

Unless you're using magic bean fluid, you should be able to obtain dextron II (or later) for less then $20.
If you want to just go for a simplier DIY, you can just try sucking (turkey baster, squirt nozzle or other suction device) and refilling the reservoir. It'll be less efficient, as you'll have to work through a couple quarts instead of just one because of mixing, but pretty much idiot proof.

If that doesn't work, you can try giving Autorx a try before biting the bullet for more expensive solutions. It has an application for power steering pumps that might help.

Question help

im having some issues w/ my gs as well. seems like a power steering pump issue. it whines and squeals very loud when first start the car and have to turn the wheels while backing out of a parking space. the whines usually go away after i have driven for a while, but i can feel the wheel being much harder to turn than before. when it whines i can kind of feel some gears grinding thru the steering wheel. you think i need a new pump? how much does that usually cost with labor?

Funny...mine just started about 3 or 4 days ago. Mine goes away once I drive around/the car warms up. I will probably change mine this weekend; I had a hunch that could be an cause to the noise.

also - i do not think i have a power steering fluid leak. the fluid has remained at the same level and i do not see any fluid leaking below, but i am not a mechanic.

what is the average price of replacing a power steering assembly? what parts are involved? should i change the bushings also?

any help would be appreciated. thanks.

u can pick up a PS pump for about $120ish at the auto store.. or doubleish at the dealership. OR u can get a rebuild kit and try to rebuild it yourself.
