Special tool for Timing belt (GS 300).....
#35
May I offer one other option to those who are in a bind and need to get the crank bolt off. I was able to take the inspection cover off of the transmission and put a pry bar on the flexplate to hold the engine. I used a block of wood to wedge the pry bar handle against the tubular frame (by the transmission) to help hold the pry bar/flexplate still. While I was doing this, a friend of mine pulled on the Crank bolt with a 18" breaker bar plus a 3ft cheater pipe to loosen the bolt. Be careful when you are holding the flexplate this way. Be sure not to bend anything. If I had to try this again, I would try using a 3/4" pipe and insert it into one of the holes on the flexplate and wedge it against the transmission housing to hold the engine stationary.
This is definitely not as good as renting Jeff's tool, but I needed to get this project rolling quickly.
I hope this helps...

Your method works, but be very careful that you don't bend/warp the flexplate. You will be in a real world of fun if that happens. The plate can bend very slightly to where you won't be able to see it, but will cause a horrible vibration once the car is started. Solution: remove the transmission from the car and replace the flex plate with a new one!

This thread sucks without the pictures. Its like all we get is sassy comments from OP without the pictures to make it make sense. The point I got is that its difficult to hold the engine to remove the crank bolt without a special tool. What I normally do is what Gears12 described unless I can just get the special tool would be easier and better.
