please help! whinning noise at 20mph+
my 98 gs300 is making a whinning noise when i go over 20mph. i thought it mighnt be the trans but when i put it in nutrale it doesnt stop. i cant tell where its comming from. it almost sounds like its comming from the front. i checked the brakes and its not that. it almost sounds like when a rear end goes out. like a humm. or like the brakes are gone and there constently rubblin metal to metal. maybe i was thinking it might be the joints on the drive shaft are bad.

i guess whinning is a bad discription... its like tire to road noise but 100 times louder than it should be. i bought the car like it is so i dont kiow how long its made the noise. my guesses are the joints on the driveshaft or wheel bearings or maybe something in the tranny. what else would make that kind of noise?

It could be a tire rubbing on something or a power steering pump that needs to be replaced. Have you checked into these as a possible cause? Did I understand you correctly, it was making this noise when you purchased it? Why didn't you have the previous owner fix it before you agreed to the purchase?
