Question Steering Wheel mods

For those of you that know a little about the Lexus steering wheel and for those of you that want a wood wheel with shift buttons:

Is there any reason why one can't cut out holes & install your buttons off the old steering wheel? It's too hard to find a wood wheel with the buttons on it, since it only came from one model.

I'm thinking one can drill through the wheel, then dremel or drill out the proper shape & install the trim rings around the buttons & you couldn't tell. The only problems I see would be if the wiring & plug is too integrated into the steering wheel. If you have to remove the leather to get the wires in it would be a much bigger PITA..any thoughts?

That sounds pretty complicated. The whole wiring thing would detract me from doing it. I think you might be better off using bananags' method of cutting the wood off of the donor wheel and attach to your wheel. either way, too daunting a task for me. Good luck and post pics.
