Alright, Does anyone know about or use synthetic oil in their gs? I have 62,000 miles on mine and I heard that it's not good to switch to synthetic with high miles. Is anyone using synthetic and is it a good idea for me to switch? Also when I fill my oil take should I fill it till the oil line is between the 2 dots on my oil stick in the center of the 2 dots or closer to the top dot? Stupid question, but I LOVE my bebe.
the new synthetics are compatible with conventional oil. you should have no problems. i switched over at about 130k and i have no leaks at all. if you have a gs4, 5.5 quarts will do it.

fyi, my gs3 takes in 5.5qts. i'm not sure if the gs4/4.3 only requires 5.5qts.Originally Posted by GSquicksilver

Yep, 5.5 quarts oil for the GS4

I don't think 62,000 is too high to switch to synthetic...go for it. I just did an oil change with synthetic for both cars. I put in 6 quarts for my gs400. And I put in 5.5 quarts in the IS300 (same motor as gs300).

I bought my GS at 113K miles, and switched to synthetic. Not sure if Mobile 1 is fully synthetic anymore or a blend, but I havent had any problems, and its been roughly 15k miles.

I bought my '01 GS300 recently w/ 110k miles and they told me it had dino oil that needed to be changed every 3k miles. I'd like to switch to Mobile 1, and change it every 10k but am afraid to make the transition w/out knowing what Lexus has to say about this. Is there any Lexus publications that address this?

dude....10k is a little overboard. your oil filter won't hold up effectively.Originally Posted by Jayhawk

I guess that's the difference between my Lexus and Mercedes S500: My standard MB service interval is 10k, and the new ones is 13k, using Mobile 1 and Fleece filters. I think I will just stay w/ the 3k dino stuff...Originally Posted by GSquicksilver

15K is way too much. I will at least change it every 7K miles for synthetic or chagne the filter!!!Originally Posted by Chenzo26

3k oil change intervals were the standard for carbureted engines back when everything had a v-8 & burned more dirtily. I read somewhere, ages ago that for any, I repeat ANY fuel injected engine 10-15k on oil isnt excessively high. This is for REGULAR, non-synth oil.
I bought my ford ranger new, and i've done oil on it every 15k (ford says 5)...lately its been closer to 30k and its got 180 on it and the engine runs like the day I bought it. The dipstick is a little dirty where the oil doesnt touch it, but its fine.
My gs4 gets amsoil in it, and I have to look at the oil to see if its dark yet. I checked it at 10k and it still looked honey-colored (brand new)...so its not dirty enough to change yet. Amsoil says replace the filter every 6 months or something like that..but I do it sooner since you can't check the filter by looking at it.
The only danger with going such a long time between oil changes is not checking your oil level. If you have a leak, you can run it too low & your oil light will come on when the oil pump sucks air. This wears on your crank bearings. I had a car that I did this in all the time, and after 200k the bearings didnt look so great.
I know you guys want to take care of your cars, but replacing clean oil is just a waste. The worst thing that can happen barring some freak accident: your engine gets dirty & you have to add seafoam to the oil 200 miles before you change it every 100k or so to clean it. no biggie. you guys probably won't keep the car that long anyways.
