There's no way other drivers would tolerate me going 55 on a socal freeway.

Massachusetts comes third on the list of most outrageous, short tempered, road rage susceptible drivers, being topped by only NY and Florida. Someone would probably pull out a submachine gun and blow up my car if I went 55 mph on the highway.

Default Her First Trip

She just went on her first trip and I got 24.9 miles per gallon on a 287 mile trip. 75 of those miles are through the hills of West Virginia on route 50. City driving I am right at 18.5 miles per gallon. I would say flat highway is about 27miles per gallon. Oh yeah, I have a '98 GS400.

Hehe, maybe in Miami, Florida. Here in Jacksonville, most people will just pass quietly. I know what you guys are talkin about, the first few days are hell going so damn slow. But after a few weeks you get used to it. My mechanic screwed up my timing belt replacement this weekend so he is in the process of replacing the valves he bent and he has let me use his 2000 Silverado. I could care less about mileage in that thing so I will go fast in it, and I find myself not being able to drive the usual 80-85 I used to before I started trying to increase my fuel efficiency.

One other thing that I do that you probably think is insane, especially in the Florida summertime, is I never use the AC. That will save on gas as well. Call me crazy...

Ya I never really use the AC much either. Just roll down the windows and make sure I have no loose papers in the seats and that works fine for me. Also trying to keep the RPMs under 3k helps. Plus I've got the GS3, and its slow as a dog, so there really is no point in mashing the gas, just makes me regret not having the v8...

roll down the windows on freeway make it less efficient. roll down on window in city is fine, but no no on freeway.

I average about 18 MPG, I guess we're both MASS HOLES. We only drive with the pedal on the right.

One thing I didn't see mentioned is do you drive with the power on or off? I am always in power mode.

I got you all BEAT! My best is 16.6mpg! lololol. I have a 2000 GS400. I guess I drive hard...eventhough I don't feel like I do. I have NEVER gotten over 270 miles on a tank. I haven't taken her on road trips though as of yet. Almost ALL (80%) of my driving is local (city).

Well, as long as they are just cracked you should be ok. Keeping the windows down too far will negate any fuel savings that you gain by keeping the air off.

I drive with it off. I'm trying not to kill myself. I'm a 16 year old n00b driver.

I drive a 99 GS400 (126k miles) and live in Portland, Maine with very little stop-and-go or heavy traffic. My work commute is under 20 miles round trip and I take maybe one longish highway trip per month. I never use the Power mode but I use the Snow mode in winter occasionally. I don't baby the car to get better gas mileage but I do use the cruise control as much as possible and keep it at 8-10 over the speed limit.
My average mpg for the past 18 months is 20.14mpg and my best is 25.3mpg.

boosted-gs: For me the trick is to check the front tire pressure weekly and to drive as reasonably as possible. I always use the same gas station and I always put premium in the tank. I try not to gun it at lights, no sudden acceleration, rarely use the A/C. It also helps that there's not much gridlock or bad traffic where I live - an idling car gets Zero MPG. You might want to check to see if you have any fluid or filter maintenance that is coming up or overdue. I think the best thing you can do is check your tires. I'm always surprised at how low the front tires can get and how quickly it happens. I rarely have to put air in the rear tires.
My wife and I are cyclists so I bought a Black & Decker ASI300 electric tire pump because it quickly and easily gets our bike tires up to 100+psi. It obviously works well on the car, too, and you might consider it a worthwhile expense if it helps you keep your tires properly inflated.
Good luck!

I been averageing about 400 miles to the tank. You guys filling up full tanks when you do this right? Not just when the light comes on because you have 4 more gallons after that.
