I was driving to work the other morning, when on the interstate at 70 or 75 mile an hour the transmission seemed to just go out and would not accelerate. Engine however is just fine. Pulled to the side of the road and cut car off. After some time of the engine cooling down I started it back up and try it again and it did work but briefly and then it went out again. It seemed to do this several times, so I was leery of getting it back on the road. I ended up having it towed home. Has anybody experienced this issue? If so, can you please give me some advice!

More information please.

Go out how? Is there any CEL? Have you check OBD scanner for codes? When you step on the gas, does the engine rev up but the car doesn't accelerate? My guess is your car is probably in limp mode.

You should scan for codes to let us better help you. The first thing I'd do is check the fluid level and condition. Engine running at idle. If there is no fluid on the stick you may just have a leak and need to add, or fix the leak then add fluid. Maybe a cooler line blew. Do you see any mess of fluid? How many miles on the car and do you know of any trans services in it's life? If the car goes into drive and rev's up normal but the car doesn't move, or barely goes forward, then the trans is slipping. You will likely need a replacement. But check the fluid level. And as far as condition, if it's black and burnt smelling, it's gonna be cooked.

Years ago I had a car with an auto tranny that started acting weird. Lurching, going into neutral or not wanting to go at all. A friend suggested getting the fluid changed. It was dark brown.

So I take it to a tranny shop for service and the guy shows me the filter is clogged with metal shavings and said I need a new tranny. After the fluid/filter change it acted normal but that little voice kept telling me it's going to break soon.

I sold the car for $1500 to a fellow getting out of the Army after telling him the situation with the tranny. I also told him if he ever wants to sell it let me know because I'd consider buying it back. This was before the internet days.

One day I get a letter from the guy postmarked Nevada saying he'd driven it from the east coast to California and was headed back to NJ to get married and if I wanted the car back he'd stop in my state and sell me the car for $5000.lol.

Point being it may just be the fluid and filter need to be changed.

It could be your fuel pump. I was on the highway a few years ago with the cruise set on 70 mph for a good hour and suddenly the car just lurched and died. I was able to nurse it to an Autozone at the next exit and they pulled the code "P0715 - Turbine/Input shaft speed sensor circuit". I thought for sure it was my transmission going out. Somehow I made it home and the Lexus dealer said they did a fuel pressure test and the fuel pump was failing. Replaced the fuel pump cleared the code and all was fine.
