Default New GS400 owner - help with moaning noise..

I just received my 98 GS400 with 57k on it. The car drives nice and seems to run great but makes a moaning noise that can be heard in and out of the car with the engine running and gets louder as the RPM's go up in and out of gear...

I dont believe it's a belt because it's not a squeak, just wondering if it's a bearing or something. Almost sounds like a power steering moan but the fluid is fine.

Does it with the a/c on and off.

It's your girlfriend, it's typical of them when you bring a GS home and it never goes away

Since you just got the car, get a good tune up and see if it makes a difference.

It's actually something from the engine compartment. It does it when the car is sitting still so that would rule out the hub.

My wife hasn't been in the car yet so rule that one out too...

power steering fluid.

use atf type IV, buy a quart from your toyota dealer and top it off.

*edit* just saw you said it's not it.

it could be a differential whine, did you try turning your wheels lock to lock to see if it gets worse?

It could be the idler pulley. The bearings inside dry out over time, and you may need to replace that particular pulley.. Do a search on "idler pulley" here on the forum. You are at 57k and close to the 60k service. When you take the car in for that service, have the dealer diagnose the problem for you while the car is on the lift. It beats paying an additional diagnostic labor charge which is about 90 bucks in some markets.

Do you have to use Type IV or regular ATF from toyota?

Thanks for the tip on the idler pulley. I'll check that out... makes sense really...

Does anyone have a pic of the pulley in question so I could check to see if that is really it? The dealer said there are two pulleys?

it's what they sell now, and mixing fluids would be a bad idea. i believe your car should have come with it from factory.

My Toyota sell both - Type IV, and regular Drexon.

I thought owner manual said use Drexon II or III ATF for power steering fluid. Someone double check for me.
