Default pumping gas ?

is it normal for when you are pumping gas and you leave the car running, when you take off the gas cap , that the car stalls out and shut off, it happened twice when i left the car running to pump gas. has this happen to anyone. but it was able to start right up after i pumped the gas.

Well, you're actually supposed to shut off the engine when pumping gas. It's actually a law in pretty much any state. The likelyhood of starting a fire is pretty small but there is the chance. But...IF you do cause a fire at the gas station due to your engine being on...you are liable for all damages !

Anyways, if you still plan to do it...the reason the engine stalls out because of the sudden change in the air pressure in the gas tank. When the cap is closed, there is a constant seal and pressure in the tank. Once you uncap it, the pressure changes so rapidly that the pump might suck in air and cause the engine to stall out. Most of the time the car will throw a check engnie light if the engine is running with no gas cap on. Just drive it around for a bit and the light will go away. Either way, keep the engine off while refueling!

I'm under the assumption that ur not suppose to have the engine running. I think gas stations have signs posted to turn the engine off before you begin to pump gas.

Yes they do and IT IS a FEDERAL law. As I said if you cause a fire or something due the engine being on...you're liable for all damages. Also, in most cases your insurance company is not going to cover any of it because it was your fault for not turning off the motor.

I wonder how much it costs to build a new gas station?
