hey i have a 2001 lexus gs 300 with about 82,000 miles. Ive been told by the dealership that i need a serpitine belt. They say its cracked. It does make a whistling noise when i first crank in the mornings. I intend to get it changed saturday. My question is my check engine light came on this morning. Could this be because of the belt need changing. I just had my oil changed. My timing belt is not recommened unill 90,000 miles. I checked the gas cap. I need to know is this something that i need to have them check out our will the light go out after the belt is changed.

 

Unless your belt is broken in 2 it would not set off your CEL (Check Engine Light.) I would suggest stopping at autozone and getting them to pull the codes for free - as opposed to paying Lexus $85 to do it.

Until you get the codes we can't tell you what is wrong with your car...

auto zone will check my codes for free i didnt know this. I will stop by tomorrow to see whats going on.

 

I went to Autozone and they let me borrow the equipment. Very easy to use.

 

can't u pull the codes yourself? or is that only on OBD-1 cars?

mine came on this morning, & I suspect low coolant (if that does set off the CEL) since it runs fine.
