GS3 vs LS4

Hey All
Since I sold my SC4, I've been looking for a GS3. But now I've been tempted by all those LS400s at the dealership....
So, does anyone know how the 98-on GS3 goes against the LS400 (say, an older one, not the 1998-on 290hp version) in a straight line fight?
I've driven both, and while I love the GS3 and the way the 5 speed really gets the thing hauling, I gotta admit, once the LS400 gets going (say, over 40mph), the V8 really gets into its stride and it starts to feel quite invincible, it's quite confusing as to which is fastest.....

If you can catch a good deal on a GS4 you'll get the best of both worlds. The style and the V8 power.
From where I sit it's worth the extra $ to get in the car that will suit you.
You may have to wait a while to start adding goodies because of the extra cost of the car, but you'll have a more satisfying platform to work from.

I agree with RealMarty. Should be able to find some GS4s in the mid-30s, maybe less. Then you can truly be omnipotent!!!! Unless you absolutely need the LS's rear seat room, I think you'll be happier in the G.
(Coming to you as as ex SC4 and ex SC3 5 speed owner......I loved my 5 speed with that 3 liter 6 howling away but I sure am happy to have 300 hp from 8 holes now......the automatic is good enough that I almost don't miss my stick!)
But it won't be a bad decision either way given your choices. Good luck.

G'day Baba,
this is fellow Australian(Doncaster, Vic.), Will.
to assist you in deciding, let me ask you what attribute is more important to you: speed, space, or handling?
Speed and Handling- go for the GS
Space - you need the ls400
when you mentioned(fastest), i assume you meant stop and go, correct? unless you are willing to go for the 98-on(290hp version;i had one before), otherwise take the gs300.
is the gs4 available down under?

Hi Will (and all)
Well, as Will said, we're in Australia, and so our choices are limited to SC3, SC4, GS3, LS4....no GS4!!
AFAIK, GS4 were only sold in the USA and Canada, and so the steering wheel is on the wrong side for us Downunder.
And like everyone's said, the GS4 is the answer (actually, the IS4 would be the answer, but they don't exist!), but they don't exist in Oz...
To give you a bit of background on myself, I used to be an amateur race driver, but I've been retired for many years. Nowadays, my track outings are just restricted to instructing at driver school days, where one of the great joys in my life has been the ability to go out in my SC400 and embarass all the boys in their WRXs and GTR Skylines
I was just wondering if any of you GS3 guys had taken on an early LS4 in a drag race. The funny thing is that while the GS3 has a small motor for a big heavy car, the low gearing and super 5 speed tranny make the most of what its got.
On the other hand, the 260hp LS4 feels awesomely powerful, but is handicapped by its supertall gearing and sloppy TC....ATM, I'm tempted to go for the LS4, put a lower Supra diff gear in it, and re-do the TC for better launches. After all, if an SC4 is embarrasing to the WRX guys, an LS4 should be more so!

I think you're right on the money... The TC mod and different rear end would make a huge difference off the line in the older LS400s. Only problem with changing the rear diff on an auto car is that you may run into the rev limiter like some people did when they changed the ratio on the GS400. I'm not sure the LS would have the same problem. A G force ECU could solve this, though as it removes or moves the limiter up. You'll also want an ECU mod as the stock one sucks and causes leaning in the mid range (at least on the US models). The leaning causes the engine to ping from around 2k to 3.5k, the knock sensors retard the ignition, and the car loses a bunch of power. I had a 93 LS that was slow around town, but could easily knock out most mustangs on the highway. As far as the GS300 on the highway, I would still think the LS could pull ahead.

let me setup something with Edogg and we'll see. Hehe.
Man i have not seen this post in a while, but i was hesitant to post here because all you GS guys.
I ran against the older gen GS300 when my LS was stock,it was even at the start all the way until until high speeds until i started to pull.
As for the new GS300,i think it will get the jump, but at high speeds, the LS400 should pull it's way back.
Plus the new GS300 have a 5speed and mine's only a 4 speed.Plus i got them heavy chrome wheels so i am at a disadvantage.

,do not get any smart ideas next time we cruise.
I will not do it!
