I'm good. I got the "adjustable" type.

does anyone know why the 98 gs steering rack is non adjustable? is it just because the guide is a roller bearing and not a smooth bushing?

I was just thinking what if i upgraded the rack guide, spring and guide nut to the newer 99+ gs model type, if that would give me the option to adjust it.

I know that the 3rd gen toyota 4runners had a similar issue and i was able to order the updated rack guide and just swap the parts.
heres the thread that i followed on replacing it on 4runner, but it shows pictures of the 2 different guides i'm not sure if they are similar to the gs, if anyone who has taken it apart can confirm.

I also searched on sewell to see if there is part number difference between the 98 and 99+ models, but the part numbers are all the same. I even looked at the 02 gs430 listing on there, but they don't list parts for the rack guide, just the whole assembly.

Hi

Does the second generation RX has this pre-tensioner?

I have steering vibration but its at 75mph. This might be due to the different size of wheel and tires compare to a GS..

Thanks,

Interesting that nobody else has caught onto this with all the people adjusting their racks - I've been fiddling with the rack in my 99 now for a while - I think my vibration is almost solved.

Thing is that my 98 (that I have owned for over 10 years) has suffered this issue for so long and frustrated me to the point where I had almost decided to live with the on again - off again vibration.

I'm about willing to order the 4runner parts for the 98 GS4 and see if they fit.

I'll report back about it if I do.

Have a look at this thread guys:

http://www.ttora.com/forum/showthread.php?t=157903

If our GS's use the same roller bearing guide as the 4runner - then upgrading to the non-bearing style could fix the issue too - maybe?

Hmm.

I just stumbled across this thread last night, and had the car at my mechanic this morning.

It was amazingly easy -- took him maybe 2 minutes to loosen (yes, counterclockwise) the outside piece, and then place a 5/8" bolt into the hex opening and tighten it approximately 10 degrees.

My car ALWAYS had the 60mph shake no matter how many times the tire shop balanced the tires. I'm rolling on a completely stock setup (17" seven spoke wheels on a 177k mile 2003 GS430), and wow, what a difference it made on the drive home. I'll likely do two other things -- the steering rack bushings and a new set of Michelins.

This is far and away the best mod on the forum, and it's free!
