So I'm watching the latest GS430 commercial. You know, the one where the guy has to get out and take a breath? Yea, it's kinda a funny. So, in the commercial, for a fraction of a second, they show him manually shifting through the auto-gate. I know others here do it, but I've never known if it is harmful. I figure, if it's in the commercial, maybe it's OK. Does anyone else have input? My thinking is that, beside the 'L' gear, it's just like E-Shift. And even when I'm e-shifting, I tend to have my hand on the shifter, so I was thinking of toying with the manual shift method. Is it OK?
Thanks,
Brian

I was under the impression that "gate shifting" was not recommended unless the vehicle was equipped with a chain ... uh... something... I think it was timing chain? instead of a timing belt?..... which does the GS have?

LexusRules,
The reason manual shift is subject to the rev limiter is because it's all electronic, just like e-shift. The way I understand it, when you shift a gear on the shift gate, it sends a signal to the computer to shift to the next gear. The way e-shift is delayed when you push the button, I think manual shifting is subject to the same delay. So to compensate, you have to get used to shifting a half second or so before you actually want the car to shift.
