I'm STILL surprised even after a long time now how responsive my car is with TC and Supra diff compared to stock.

Yeah, I never drove a stock GS until a few months ago. Felt like I was a tug boat skipper ! Still fast though.

I have let a few people drive my car to compare with theirs and all I know is they want the LSD and TC after doing so.

It's obviously hard to evaluate the tranny mod when the LSD and TC are also on the list of changes. Problem is, most people who do the tranny mod will probably have done the TC / LSD already.

re the very first thread on this about cruising no prob at 1500rpm on interstate.

How can you cruise at 1500rpm with a 2800 stall? Wouldn't there be some slipping going on?

I'm not trying to be a smart a##, I just don't quite understand. Is it just as smooth as before? Does anyone know what rpm the stock stall is rated?

thanks

I don't personally have a TC, but from all the threads I have read, installing a PI/TC further improves the launch from a stop. It has a higher stall speed of 2800 rmp compared to the stock 1800 rpm. This just means the engine spools up to 2800 rpm before it moves. Higher rpms = takes off faster from a stop

fairly correct. just want to note about the car moving - it'll move as soon as you touch the gas, but if you get into the gas hard, then it will rev to 2800rpm until the speed of the car catches up to that rpm level.

somewhere, someone had questioned the 1800rpm stall speed so I checked it a few times today. all I can say is that my 99 GS400 is INDEED an 1800rpm stall.

the PI tc is a locking type, so it will not slip when you are cruising

THey are not different brands but rather different types. Clutch type is not reactive like the other two. It always locks the two sides together unles it needs slip in which case it unlocks. The other two types are reactive to slip and will start sending traction to the wheel that is not spinning. The Clutch type also does this but already has the advantage of better traction long before any tire spin begins to happen. FAR superior in road racing and drag racing but the downside is that they often make some noise from the plates rubbing against one another. This problem is solved by using a carbon fiber composite plate which is what ATS uses. I have seen nothing but spectacular results with the ATS units and can't wait to try mine out.

Default Time to take some LSD!

Ok....this tread has pushed me over the edge & made decide to get an LSD! Sounds like its one of those must have mods! I'm thinkin I want a new one (vs used). Sounds like the TRD Supra 3.76 is the way to go??

Where is the best place to get one? From reading previous posts, Carson may be a good vendor. Just curious if anyone has some last minute advice fo rme before I pull the trigger. Anybody out there get a sweet deal on a new LSD?

if you are not going to do any FI, get the supra torsen 3.76, not the trd. i think that's a better value. putting the trd clutch lsd in the supra 3.76 housing i think that's even more money?

I was able to get a brand new TRD lsd for 650.00, my local shop ordered it for me. We did use my stock gears but I haventt seen a better price yet. Even with the labor it was under 1500

rominl, where can you get a Supra TT 3.76 gear Torsen type LSD? Did a Google search and did not get any significant hits. Is this a used part only?

morris, good price on the TRD unit. Carson (http://l-tunedparts.com/) lists them for $899 (which is still a good price). Is this a 3.76 Gear unit as well?

thanks for your feedback,

My unit did not come with the gears, we removed the gears from the stock unit and installed them into the LSD. We then reinstalled the entire sub assembley.

Note that I am FI and didnt want the 3.76 gears, so the stock 3.23 gears fit the bill nicely and I got the LSD functionallity.

you guys ever notice rear end noise after any of these swaps. I was just curious because my gs43 just had the whole differential replaced(Warranty) due to a humming sound around 55mph. It only has 23k miles. Dealer said it had excessive clearance.

No noise for me, but from what I udnerstand the noise is often a result of improprely installing the gears and such
