Default Help with manual shift

GS newbie, I aquired a 1999 GS400, The isn't perfect but far from ragged out. Everything on the car works 💯 including the touch screen and Nav. The only that doesn't work is manual shift mode. Whern I shift to M the green D light stays on. When manually pull the shifter back the to 3rd and 2nd indicator light works and the car manually ****s. When I stop and apply the brake the and shift to L I get no light and I think it shifts to 2nd ion its own it's hard to tell. Should there be a gear # light on the dash? I am not seeing one.

It might just be the indicating light on the gage cluster / lever panel thing. When you put it in M, are you able to change gears with the buttons on the steering wheel? There will be a number showing the gear you're in on the middle gage, just shift down and up to see if that number changes. If it changes, it might just be your indicating lights.

Also, to check if manual mode works, just go to a parking lot and put it in manual mode, and click down to 2nd gear using the buttons on the steering wheel, slowly accelerate and upshift using the buttons on the wheel, and you get the idea.

So when you move the shifter to the M, it still shifts itself until you use the shift buttons once you tell it to shift, then you have to tell it to shift until you put it back in auto. I know this is probably obvious, but remember the downshift buttons are on the face of the steering wheel and the upshift buttons are on the back side of the wheel. I don’t use mine often, but when I do I always forget about the buttons on the back, and end up hitting the downshift button when I meant to up shift. Try not to repeat my mistakes. I have found it’s easier to just use the shifter to handle gear selection when I don’t want it in auto mode.
