Default radiator blew up....93 gs300

my girlfriend was driving down the highway and heard what she compared to as a large fire cracker and immediately steam. she pulled over immediately and turned it off and called a tow truck. it literally blew a chunk of the top of the radiator off measuring approx. 1 1/2" x 5". I getting ready to put in the new radiator but am wondering what could of caused that to happen and if there is anything i need to check or be worried about. i've never heard of something like this happening.

thank you. -Jon

Head gasket leak? I’d do a pressure check on the cooling system at the very least.

Pressure check and at least a new thermostat with the new radiator. Maybe new hose as well.

When I put a TRD radiator cap on my 26 year old Aristo, the water neck portion of the upper radiator exploded within about 4 miles. It was the pressure raise that pushed it over the limit. It might just have been time. The plastics used are essentially "pot-metal" quality and not designed to last an eternity. They are a designed wear item and antifreeze is a pretty harsh chemical.
