Default D.I.Y-Flasher Relay Mod-L.E.D HYPER FLASH FIX

Hey guys I have a had a few people ask how I modified the stock flasher relay to work with LED turn signal bulbs with "Hyper" flash issues so I am doing this short D.I.Y/Write up.

First locate the flasher relay. Its on the drivers side to the right of the fuse block. You will have to move the carpet out of the way. There with be 3 relays. 1 relay with 2 under it. The top relay is the flasher relay.

Pull the relay out.

Once the relay is out use a small flat head screw driver to remove the cover. Once the cover is off you should see a silver bar.

This bar is a resistor and lets the relay know how much wattage there should be. So when a bulb is out the relay flashes faster to let you know a bulb because there is less wattage being used. LED bulbs use less wattage so the relay actually thinks you have a bulb out. By removing a small amount of material you are making the resistor smaller which makes the relay look for less wattage.

I used a die grinder like this...

To slowly remove material then reinstall the relay and check the speed of the flash. It took 3 or 4 tries but it worked.

Pic after I was don't removing material

After you are done put the relay cover back on and reinstall the relay.....NO MORE HYPER FLASH!

While you are removing material and checking put the turn signal on for about 30 seconds just to check. When I first tried this it would flash normally for a few seconds and then start Hyper flashing again. I just removed more and it was fine. I have been running this way for a few days now with no problems. I hope this helps anyone interested!!!!!

Nice! Good write up!

Now when you removed material did you remove it from the ends shortening the bar or did you take it from the sides making it slimmer in a sense?

Thanks!!

I removed the material from here

It is the area with the most material to be removed. That section has little ridges or grooves in it so I pretty removed enough to make it smooth and that worked for me.

Thanks for the write up, just did this mod.

It took me 3 tries to finally remove enough material from the relay's resistor. Also be very careful not to touch the copper coil winding if using a dremmel tool. One touch with a dremmel and the coil wire is instantly cut, rendering your flasher relay useless. Happened to me..

The relay is located to the left of your left foot at ankle height, up against the inner wall(behind the carpet). I had the hardest time finding it on my own, then I finally decided to come back and look at the pictures, and it started to make sense.

Once again thank you greatly for the write up.
It works like a charm.!

EDIT: Oh! After the first test shaving of the relay's resistor and installing the relay, make sure to turn on your headlights, high beams, Air conditioner, and radio and then test the turn signals. For me, with all of these accessories off, the blinker would work like stock, but once I turned on the headlights, it caused a difference in current draw/voltage, and the blinker went back into hyper-mode. So I tuned on all of these accessories, and re-shaved the resistor 3 times, until I have removed enough to return the blinker back to stock.

Default Headlights on.

Excellent write up. One thing though..... You'll have to also check the signals when the headlights are on. When they were off i was fine but as soon as i put them on again they flashed faster. I just shaved a little more off and that did it. So check with headlights on too.
