Default April 3-5 Tail of the Dragon

Well if your in the Columbus area, a whole bunch of my buddies and I are planning a tail of dragon trip

here's our agenda:

Well, its that time of the year for the Tail of the Dragon trip. Here is an overview/details of whats going on. Make sure you leave these dates free from school or work. It's looking pretty promising at this point, unless the weather is really bad with snow etc.

When: April 3rd, 4th and 5th. For those who are in school, it is the first week of spring quarter classes @ CSCC and OSU.

Here is the layout of the Trip:

April 3rd: We will be meeting up for breakfast at Waflehouse or similar place for breakfast at 6:30AM. The drive will take us around 9.5 hours to complete going through West Virginia, not Kentucky. Its more scenic and not as boring to drive, although longer with a couple of toll booths. Arriving at around 5:00 PM or so we will unpack get some food and go out for an evening run on the dragon if not burned out from driving here. The road leading us to the Hotel will run through Deals Gap, so at least one pass will be done. Also, we will stop at a nearby town to grab some beer as the whole area is pretty much dry, unless one plans on driving into the mountains for an hour to a store to get beer.

April 4th: Get up whenever, around 8:00 AM or so to maximize our time here. Get breakfast and go out on the road. We will do several runs on deals gap and will also take the Cherohala Skyway, which is a 120 mile loop. We can bring food to have lunch on top of the mountain, there are stops to do so. More runs on the gap afterwards. Get dinner and drink beer.

April 5th: Get up relatively early around 7:00 AM, get food do a couple of runs on or take Ruby Run Loop. Its lengthy, around 200 miles but we can cut it short and only do 35 miles out and 35 back. Unless we can plan something with the GPS and do the loop halfway through and shoot up north to take us to the main highway 441. It cuts through the heart of the mountains to our freeway back home. So, planing to leave or be on our way by 1:00 or 2:00 PM. Being back in Columbus around midnight.

Expenses:
Hotel- depending on which one we get, Topaco Lodge is $110 a night, Micro INN is $70 a night. Costs will vary, but so far 4 people are going for sure. A room with two twin beds can be split. I can bring an air mattress as well. So splitting two night between four people should be $40 bucks a person @Micro INN.
Gas - The trip is 550 miles one way, 550 miles back and around 400-500 miles while being there. So figure out the cost per your car/gas milage.
Food - Bring $40-50 bucks for food and beer
Other misc- car washes, tolls etc.

Car:
Make sure ya get an oil change, check tires, fluids, breaks etc before going. If someone can bring a tool box, just in case it would be awesome.

Photo/Video:
I will bring my DSLR for pictures and such, you are more than welcome to bring video/photo equipment. At least once we will have a photo shoot at the dam or other interesting places we might find.

Maps:
I am working on them right now, Ill send out another email with links to google maps. Bring your GPS if ya can.

I think I've covered it all here, if you have questions email me or call me. Please reply back if you are going for sure by the end of the week. I will need to make reservations by the end of the month for the hotel/lodge.

P.S. One last thing, if ya know anyone that wants to go, forward them this email.

if you d like to go just let me know and ill make sure i get you the maps/ any further info you would need!

I took a modded '05 Mustang GT through deal's gap two summers ago. Tires squealing the whole way, haha. The views are awesome too, lots of photo opps.
I would love to make it back down there this summer, can't commit yet though.

good luck with your trip. I would go up that weekend, but it's also my birthday so can't go. I'm about to plan a late spring trip for the folks living in the SE pretty soon. I would advise that you not drive the dragon at night as the roads can accumulate moisture which is not so good for HP tires...

^ We were just talking about planning this same annual trip for CL. I'll come over for some mountain fun. I can always drive these roads more than once a year.
But if you can wait until May then hold out for the CL classic Dragon trip.
