Anyhow, there has been another fatality involving a Tesla with an (apparant) runaway Self-Driving System. This one happened in Harris County, Texas, near Houston, where a runaway Model 3 crashed at high speed into a suburban house, killing a 76-year-old woman who lived there. Interestingly, the driver of the Model 3 survived (or, should I say, the front-seat-occupant, since the computer was driving), despite the high-speed impact. He apparantly was not seriously hurt although taken to the hospital as a precaution, was not intoxicated, and is cooperating with police and investigators. Even if the self-driving system does not work properly, at least the safety-equipment on a Model 3 does in protecting the occupants.. ;)

Since we are in peak summer now, I have started to look Again for a used convertible cruiser. I have never owned a convertible, so thought this would be a cool experience. Also gives me a reason to buy another car….

Looking for something cheap - maybe $20-30k since it will live outside and I don’t want to really care about it. I also want to be able to get rid of it by Oct/Nov.

My requirements are Great styling, great sounding and ideally can fit 4 people.
Options I’m considering:
- Maserati GranTurismo
- Audi S5/RS5
- BMW e46/e93 M3 or F83 M4
- BMW e46 330i / e93 328i (NA inline 6) / F33 440i (N55 motor)
- C6/C7 Corvette
- 981 Boxster (probably will need to stretch by budget)
- 991 911 (really high mileage and would need to double by budget)
- Merc SL (R230 / R129)

I have driven most of the cars above and I think E93 M3 or 328i would be the perfect choice.
Unfortunately most of these options are not 4 seaters. What are some other cars that I’m overlooking? (No Mustang, Camaro, FWD cars)

Btw FB marketplace is full of garbage lol
Every local car I looked at is not how it was advertised.

Couple of days ago my TX350 popped an idiot light. I checked my info system and two faults appeared. Got my suv into the dealer right away. Got it back next day, all fixed I'm told. Excellent! Get to work and decided to check my info screen and my vehicle issues. They only fixed one of the issues!
If the service department had bothered to either look at my screen or plug in an OBD reader they would have been able to fix everything in one visit. But nooooo! Now I get to make an appointment again and drive there.
Yes, I'm angry. Lexus of Jacksonville obviously had morons working there.

Tesla Model Y Performance - My Review

My wife and I test drove the new Model Y Performance this weekend.

Styling - Overall looks very good especially with Performance trim. The front end is a huge upgrade over the previous version. Doesn’t look goofy anymore. The diffuser and spoiler are just enough to give it some additional style. I think a little drop with some proper wheels would really make it look cool.

Interior - HUGE improvement in terms of quality and the sport seats are excellent.
I still hate the lack of gauges and lack of a cover for the glass roof.
The main deal breaker is the rear seat - getting in is very tight and the seat itself is narrow/small even in comparison to the X3 we had.

FSD - This is the first time I experienced alone while being in the driver seat. Holy **** it’s unbelievable. The Mad Max mode was insane, it was doing 10-15mph over the speed limit and would be driving like a BMW driver lol. I was pretty much sold on the future and felt like I was in Demolition Man. No prompting to touch the wheel etc. It drove perfectly especially when i put it in standard mode. I can’t imagine most people driving 10 years from now.

Me Driving - i took it on some of my backroads and it has very good dynamics. Great seating position. Heavy / sporty steering, good brakes, very composed on tight turns. It’s genuinely fun to drive. The ride comfort is also very good, better than my X5 at taking bumps and potholes. Interior was very quiet and no rattles.

Technology - the center screen, its like having a Mac computer. Fast, great graphics - still leader in this regard.

Rarely these days do I get impressed by new cars especially by driving them.
For $60k - i think this is probably the Best car you can buy for performance, tech and also functionality. The FSD takes this thing to another level and makes it more than just a regular car. I was completely blown away by how good it drove and this is just the beginning really. It’s pretty incredible and insane!

Internal dealership diagnostic logs and forensic service-bay data indicate a growing drivetrain problem in fourth‑generation Toyota Tacomas (2024–2026): premature failures in the AL80F 8‑speed automatic—particularly pressure‑control solenoids and torque‑converter clutch actuators—plus fragile front CV/driveline components are causing harsh shifting, clutch slippage, debris‑contaminated fluid and abrupt limp‑mode events often appearing within the first ~10,000 miles. Failures are frequently temperature‑dependent (worse on cold starts), and some dealers have trouble replicating symptoms or initially dismiss them as normal adaptive shifting; owners report slipping, jerking between gears and long repair/backorder delays. The report recommends documenting mileage/conditions, demanding full OBD‑II data streams and fluid analysis, insisting on cold‑start ride‑along diagnostics, and escalating to corporate or consumer protections if dealers won’t acknowledge or fix suspected hardware defects. There is a TSB on the matter.

I expect healthy debate with some intense moments but absolutely no personal attacks.

There are Autonomous ratings and some brands are higher than the others. Tesla is obviously the most widely used and some will argue the best system. I do believe Mercedes is the only level 3 system and they accept full responsibility if anything happens under that system.

Personally I feel Lexus was right calling their system a drivers assist. I drove a LS with it and it was something else. A very safety oriented thing so there was no way to do dumb tiktok tricks inside.

I definitely can see its usefulness on the highway. Still as a car enthusiast it’s hard to let the wheel go to a computer.

Again, NO PERSONAL ATTACKS. Let your arguments out.

(Just kidding on the betting) ;)

No, I'm actually serious, though, about the next automotive step. I typically keep a vehicle 4-6 years.....my present one (an Encore GX) is a 2021 (I ordered it in the fall of 2020, and it arrived in January of 2021)...so, I've had it for well over 5 years now, and it is almost 6 model years old. I consider 5 years or so the economic sweet-spot between losing too much money in the first few years of depreciation vs. the increasing likelihood of non-warranty repairs as it ages past that....and I need good day-to-day reliability because of the volunteer work I do almost every day, shopping, medical appointments, etc..... Also, in general, all else equal, the more miles you put on a vehicle, the less it is worth.

Rather than get an end-of-model-year 2026 vehicle that's been sitting on the lot, which may a little cheaper due to end-of-year clearance-incentives from the manufacturers (and always pay cash in total, so the low-financing is irrelevant, and you don't have to worry about credit-ratings), I've decided to order a new 2027, right off the assembly-line, with fresh tires, battery, paint, weatherstripping, fresh fluids in the engine, etc.... IMO, that is worth maybe a few extra $$$$ on the transaction-price.

Before I actually do the paperwork, deposit, order-forms, etc... however, I'm waiting for the final 2027 specs on the vehicle to come out from the manufacturer to see what colors, specs, packages, options, will be available (or still be available) and what will change. Then I'll know exactly what I can order. I suspect that will be some time this summer, so, until then, I'm just waiting.

So, if anybody wants to guess on the vehicle....fire away. :) I'll give you the answer as soon as someone correctly guesses it.

I'll give you two hints.........

First, it may (?) surprise some of you......not others who have known me for a while. ;)

Second, it will not break the bank. I don't spend large amounts of money on really expensive vehicles....certainly not six-figure ones. Even with vehicle-purchases, I still believe in keeping a big cushion of money in the bank for emergencies, investing, and other needs.....especially in these inflationary times. ;)
