The official EPA ratings are finally out for the 2023 Hyundai IONIQ 6, and wow, are they impressive, blowing away most expectations.

Hyundai unveiled its IONIQ 6 “electrified streamliner” last June to the world, a sportier and more aerodynamic electric vehicle than its first dedicated EV, the IONIQ 5 SUV.

Based on the same 800V E-GMP platform as the IONIQ 5, the streamliner offers advanced capabilities like vehicle-to-load (V2L), ultrafast charging (up to 80% in as little as 18 minutes ), and the latest technology.

Hyundai initially estimated the IONIQ 6 would get an estimated 340 miles on a single charge at the LA Auto Show, claiming it to be one of the most efficient EVs on the market, with an ultralow drag coefficient of 0.22.

The IONIQ 6 also has added active air flaps, wheel gap reducers, a wing-inspired spoiler with winglet, a full underbody cover, flow separation traps, and slight boattail structure to boost aerodynamics.

The sleek streamliner is in high demand as the first edition sold out in less than 24 hours after launching in Germany, the UK, France, Norway, and the Netherlands.

Hyundai’s IONIQ 6 is about to arrive in the US, and with final EPA testing complete, the streamliner looks to earn its share of the booming market.

Hyundai IONIQ 6 official EPA range revealed

In a press release today, Hyundai confirmed the EPA estimated range for all 2023 IONIQ 6 trim levels.

The longest-range model in the lineup, the IONIQ 6 SE Long Range RWD, is officially rated at 361 miles. Compared to the IONIQ 5 EPA estimated range of 303, Hyundai’s second dedicated EV features an additional 58 miles.

Hyundai says the improved range is due to its superior aerodynamics. Olabisi Boyle, VP of product planning and mobility strategy at Hyundai Motor North America, explains:
Instead of just adding a larger battery to increase the range, we chose to optimize IONIQ 6’s aerodynamic performance and its Electric-Global Modular Platform for efficiency to produce these long driving ranges.

Liked by 13 peopleI have owned many Tesla(s) and fully expect the combined effort of other EV manufacturers to close the gap Tesla has in less than two years, looking forward to it as thats means we the consumer will not only have choices, that in my eyes is fantastic.

View all commentsEPA testing confirmed a 140 combined MPGe rating for the IONIQ 6 SE RWD Long Range edition, placing it among the top of Fueleconomy.gov’s 2023 top 10 list with the 2023 Lucid Air Pure AWD and 2023 Lucid Air Touring AWD.

Hyundai says the IONIQ 6 electric streamliner will be available in US dealerships starting this spring.

Not a fan of the roofline, but that front view is probably awesome

I can't get past the droopy looks, shame because tech wise the car is fantastic. Do any of these cars really need 20" wheels?

First saw one of these in ads ran during the football playoffs last Sunday. Kevin Bacon was touting the product. It looked really sleek and appealed to me.

The answer is NO. The are noisy, make the ride rougher and louder. I would switch them out to 19". When I eventually get my Model 3P, if they come with 20" I'm going to switch them out ASAP

Such a gigantic hit when swapping out wheels. On the flip side, a pretty sizable improvement over the 5 due to most likely aerodynamics. Even real life EV6 vs. 5 range shows a decent improvement with the EV6. Remarkable how big of a role these two things play.

Regardless, awkward looking car, but more options is fine with me. Hopefully price isn't outrageous.

There are some cars where I love the styling so much, I am willing to overlook some of their other flaws. There are other cars that I think are incredible, but the styling is so bad that I couldn't possibly own one, no matter how good they are.

This falls in the latter category for me.

It's not just the wheel size hurting the range, but the tires. The 18's are Primacy's while the 20's are much stickier Pilot Sports.

The styling of the car is awful. Wheels too.

In person, they are really cool looking. WAY better looking in person. Rear end reminds me of the 911.

timmy0tool Feb 1, 2023 03:48 PM

rear end reminds me of an infiniti j30...remember those?!

Yup, many here myself included pointed out the J30 similarities at the rear end in prior threads

Such an awkward car but sometimes I kinda dig awkward cars. Just for the sake of being different and not blending in with literally every other 4 door sedan. It's refreshing

So it's 270 miles range on the epa cycle if you want real tires and rims? How about at a 75-85 mph cruise?

At 85 mph I get about 230 to 240 mile range, so this will easily do over 300 miles at 85 mph as it's way more efficient than my Polestar

That's not too horrible then, still only about half of what I'm used to though
