Truth on both sides. Tesla probably IS irresponsible, but so are the morons who try and "drive" the vehicle from the rear seat, take naps behind the wheel, or fail to think about or anticipate unexpected situations that are beyond the ability of the self-driving system to detect....such if police have the road blocked off ahead for a crime-scene, or temporary construction causes slower speeds or a detour.

None of this is to devalue the immense progress Tesla made in the past few years when it comes to driver-assist systems and technology. The cars are incredibly smart, but regulators continue to point out areas where safety is lacking. Homendy told the newspaper that Tesla needs to resolve "basic safety issues" before expanding features for FSD and Autopilot.
Tesla makes the safest cars on the road.

What this is really about is lobbying (read corruption) because other auto makers are so far behind. The exact same thing is happening with EV incentives Tesla is never mentioned by law makers even though Tesla is by far the best selling EV in the United States and furthering the green agenda regulators are touting. There are also a bunch of loop holes and special treatment for car makers that just happen to be unionized. The entire thing stinks.

I remember when Tesla made the "Safest cars on the road" comment by using some creative license with the safety results from NHSTA. They got told to knock it off, rightfully so.

They should have said that it scored the highest in the NHTAS safety tests which is an objective measure that cant be refuted. This doesn't necessarily equate to mean its the "safest" car on the road though and thats what NHTSA had an issue with. It did score higher than any car measured before it though.

Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy said the electric carmaker is "irresponsible" for even calling the technology "full self-driving." Indeed, FSD is a Level 2 driver-assist system, based on the SAE Scale of Autonomy. There are no self-driving cars on sale.
Still amazed Toyota has a Level 3 autonomous and Tesla does not :D I knew this would all eventually catch up with Tesla. Irresponsible indeed :thumbdn:

I didn't see anything suggesting it was the only car to receive 5 stars across the board in NHTSA tests when these claims were made in 2018-I believe the Honda Accord achieved the same, for example.

Agreed but that is what the consumer sees. Manufacturers have a more detailed report on their safety and Tesla at the time scored higher than anyone else. Again, scoring highest doesn't mean its safest...just that is how Tesla interpreted it.

I have said it time and time again, just like the article says, it’s not the technology that is at issue, it’s really what Tesla is calling it and touting. By analogy, we have securities rules that say you can’t present results that are potentially misleading to an investor by window dressing. I see this as no different, they should really change the name because people are dumb.

Level 3 is defined by the level of human interaction necessary for it to be autonomous. Waymo has had level 3 for awhile that is far more advanced than any of the auto guys but they are all limited by the geographic limitation of the system meaning level 3 can only be used in that specific geographic location. Waymo has level 3 in Phoenix and certain other locations but thats it because it has to be in an extremely simple situation. Same with Toyota and GM and all the other guys that claim level 3. Level 3 doesn't mean its more advanced technologically, it just means it can do it with less human interference for that use case.

Tesla's level 2 has a far different objective as its training its AI for all driving situations. In terms of AI and programming, its far more advanced than any one of them but uses computer vision strictly. This means that it may be take longer to achieve level 3 and beyond because their AI has to become good enough to recognize all situations without following pre-programmed rules using lidar. Having Level 3 in a certain use case or city is worthless to Tesla...they have to have level 3 uniformly for them to monetize it effectively.

I completely agree, the naming and marketing of this system is irresponsible. "Full self driving" this system is not. I don't see how anybody can legitimately disagree...

My bad. No level 3. Toyota did have SAE level 4 vehicles during the Olympics. Toyota LQ is SAE level 4 certified as well. There was a crash but the vehicles did come back online. Honda has level 3.

welcome to politics. that word comes from 'poly' meaning many and 'tics' which are blood sucking insects. :D

same thing goes for defense spending on programs that are useless but because politicians need to 'bring home the bacon' and have contractors and military bases in their districts, they vote for these bloated, wasteful and often completely unnecessary expenditures.

all the politicians of mid and east northern and midwestern states are going to back measures to help their uaw voters. it stinks as you say.

tesla should just rename it and move on. call it the driving assistance computer or something.

Different links/sources/opinions don't all agree on what is considered the safest brand, but, in general, Volvo has had the best safety-reputation over the years, with Mercedes also ranking very high.
