The Salton Sea, which is the largest lake in the US state was being studied by scientists as part of research funded by the Department of Energy.

The study aimed to find how much lithium, also known as 'white gold due to its white sand-like appearance, was at the bottom of the huge body of water.

Amazingly there was a lot of it - an unbelievable 18 million tons are believed to be sitting at the bottom of the lake. This was after scientists had already confirmed that four million tons of lithium were in the lake, which were discovered through a drilling process.

Amazing find! Though, isn't that lake some kind of ecological dumpster fire? I remember somebody mentioning that you can smell it way before you can see the lake due to all the dead animals around it.

It is, it's been destroyed by all the water and animal waste running off of the farmland in the area

So where exactly are we going to find enough child labor to extract all this lithum? Did any of these so-called "scientists" bother to stop and think about that???

on a more serious note, why child labor? i figure this is all drilling and heavy machinery.

He was joking. The argument has been "there is not enough Lithium" and has since shifted to all the lithium we get is from child labor. This will 100 percent be mined through heavy machinery

If the lake is in California there is no way they would allow the mining of it. They would look so hypocritical if they were to allow it given the impact to the environment. The backlash would be real.

This is a more conservative part of California. They will harvest the lake to the last lithium particle :D
