MASSIVE Tesla Recall for Autopilot Function.....2 Million vehicles

Ordinarily I would post Tesla news in the Tesla-Buisness thread, but this is such an enormous recall that I thought it deserved a special new thread. Some 2 million Teslas are getting an autopilot update that will put new restrictions on the self-driving features, including what roadways it can be used on. Apparantly the vehicles will not have to go to dealerships like with a conventional recall.......Tesla (somehow???) :uh: is transmitting the data to the owners themselves.

'MASSIVE' might simply be rephrased as ALL Tesla recall :p

the 'somehow' is just like how your smart phone will update apps or iOS/Android - over the air (OTA). :)

Is this satire? I legit can't tell.

No...at least not deliberate satire on my part. My point was that Tesla is claiming that the vehicles do not have to be updated at the dealership, and that the date can be sent directly to owners. I have never seen that before, so I included a question mark because it is an interesting question whether it will be effective or not. There have already been several previous Tesla recalls for autopilot features......and more and more problems keep cropping up even after them.

Bitkahuna, though, may have at least partially-answed the question, comparing it to computer and cell-phone updates. But problems seem to keep occurring in spite of these updates.

INMO, it begs the question of whether vehicles will ever be truly self-driving or not....at least in my lifetime......although I myself am older than many other members here, and not likely to live as long.

Tesla has been doing over the air updates for 10 years, how have you not heard about it?

This is not a conventional recall it shouldn't even be called that. Tesla fixes almost all issues automatically as the car sits no dealership trip needed. Everything from airbags to windows. And the car keeps improving with age especially safety all Tesla's now deploy airbags before the crash happens.

My thoughts exactly. How could someone miss that??

@mmarshall , it's basically being fixed by an Over the Air Update. My Model Y gets at least two updates a month. Literally, the story can be summed up thus:

"Tesla gets Autopilot recall. OTA update on it's way. News at 10."

be nice guys, mmarshall is older and not technical. but i'm sure he gets it now.

i think any fix to a problem reported to them by iihs/nhsta has to be termed a 'recall' i believe.

OTA updates are still a relatively newer thing for cars. Tesla may have been doing it for 10 years but it would be easy to not know that if you're not a long-time Tesla person.

Very true.

I wouldn't know squat if it wasn't for this EV forum.

Everyone's posts, links, insight, vidoes, etc is the only reason I know anything.

And here's the shocker...
I fix electronics for my job but EV's are just something I didn't look much into. Lol

A recall implies some kind of defect that needs to be fixed. This is simply the NHTSA cracking down on Tesla autopilot and making it less effective.

LOL ok that made me laugh.

Striker223 Dec 14, 2023 03:24 AM

Wait a second......is this a forced update that removes functions? If so this is happening sooner than I expected it to happen with OTA capable cars, hopefully this is a one time thing and doesn't go the direction of progressively removing more and more/pulling an Apple and slowing older cars down.

It would IMO be complete BS if they are gimping autopilot and owners can't refuse it.
