Since 2023 I've been using only my phone to drive both our Tesla's with zero issues except the occasional restarting BT, which takes literally 3 seconds. I can't wait until they add support for Android watches... although I still need my phone for other things, like posting here on CL :)

I trust the Tesla phone as a key 100% since I have NEVER had a problem with it to drive even when the phone wouldn’t connect to the car for some reason and it has done that a few times recently even after a reboot of the car and phone.

With my old BMW I just didn’t trust my phone only as a key and always had the fob on me.

I have the carabiner key for my Rivian and I bring it with me all the time. It's just super convenient to hang off a belt loop and open the frunk or rear hatch without having to unlock my phone. I've gone out without it, but it's a nice to have.

Watch doesn’t need cellular if phone is close by or watch connected to wifi

you still don’t get it. phone/watch key works by BLUETOOTH not cellular.

Then it’s not real world ready if one ventures out with just the Apple Watch. Probably best to keep the back up card.

Road trip? Across America. Boston to L.A. Just wearing an Apple Watch?

substitute card or watch or phone for PHYSICAL KEY. if you only have the latter you’re ALSO kinda screwed if you lose it with no backup.

but keep those false strawmen coming.

also, no one’s doing a road trip across the u.s. without a phone. :egads:

Jill may be an android user :dunno:

Hey, I resemble that remark 🤣

I think Jill just selectively chooses not to understand. No other explanation unless you live in a cave....

My AppleWatch (cellular) has been gradually morphing into a primary device the past couple years. Leave iPhone at home all the time. Curiously.... when I erased my iPhone to send it to Apple for repair I no longer had access to my credit cards with AppleWatch, nor receive text. Still make and receive calls. AppleWatch is not as independent as I thought.

interesting . Lots of people are unaware there is Apple Watch and Apple Watch with cellular.

Apple Watch with cellular the battery will drain quicker than Apple Watch.

You mean people like you. Smart watches have had cellular going back to 2015. But that is not the topic of discussion here, it's about using your watch as a key to open and drive a vehicle (Tesla in this case), but you keep for some reason deflecting to cellular for some reason:dunno:

you do not need a phone or wifi or cellular or bluetooth to use an apple watch to pay for stuff. it uses NFC and basically acts as a credit card. it might be that if a merchant doesn’t support apple pay it doesn’t work.

It's as simple as this for a Tesla. You have 5 options: Smart-phone and Smart-watch (Apple watch for now), as well as these options:

So if you are a technophobe, you can buy one of the above options, and it takes about 5 seconds to pair with your vehicle. I personally think we have discussed this to death. Hopefully we can move on from smart watches and cellular
