"The Tesla Model Y has become a top-selling car in Iceland and Australia. Tesla aimed to make the Model Y the best-selling vehicle in any category worldwide, and the SUV is performing as expected"

"Recently, Tesla Europe shared that the Model Y broke a 35-year-old record in Iceland. The Tesla Model Y became the best-selling car within the first 6 months of 2023. Iceland has been partial to Toyota vehicles over the last few decades. However, Tesla has shaken Iceland’s car market and gained massive support from the locals, thanks to the Model Y and the Model 3"

This thread is not meant to be anti Toyota or anti ICE, just Tesla related information. Let's keep it on topic! Thanks!

iceland? all their energy is renewable and they offer MASSIVE tax breaks / incentives for ev's. so hardly surprising.
basically the same in norway.

bitkahuna Jul 6, 2023 06:47 AM

australia - also huge tax incentives for ev's.

so again, it's govt market distortion, not just demand from desire.

Everyone that I know including myself would have bought our Tesla's regardless of tax incentives. I'm not minimizing that they don't help, but the same could be said about cheap government subsidies on gasoline. Take those away, sell gasoline at $7 plus a gallon like in Europe, and Americans will be abandoning their cars in droves, EV tax credits or not

In the biggest market for Tesla in the US, I suspect that a significant percentage of buyers don’t qualify for the tax incentives at either the state or federal level as they exceed the income thresholds. And yet they still fly off the shelves.

I don't know how the tax incentives work in places like Iceland or Australia, but in the US even if you qualify, you don't actually see the benefit until you do your taxes the following year. And it's not like they hand you $7500...all it does is bring your tax burden down. California has pretty strict income requirements, and you only get one rebate. If you buy a second EV, you are out of luck

That's right. It's changing, from next year you may be able to get the federal rebate at the point of sale, but for now you will only get it if you have sufficient tax capacity (i.e. your liability is more than the rebate) and you meet the conditions. One thing you can do, if you are sure will qualify is adjust your withholding or, if you are subject to them, reduce your estimated tax payments, as a means of accelerating the rebate but it's at your own risk.
