Here come the EV taxes
Under the legislation, public charging stations would have to track their kilowatt-hour usage and would be required to collect a tax per every 11 kWh. According to the Georgia Department of Revenue, a license plate for a traditional vehicle is $20 each year. The licensing fee for a non-commercial alternative fuel vehicle is $212.78. IMO this is just the beginning, they can paint any tax or fee on a blank canvas. No tax for home charging yet. |

Sure there is. Your home utilities are taxed - look at your bill.

But no explicit tax on an EV charge. I think that is what they mean in the article

I'm not even sure how that would be accomplished. How does a home EV charger "look different" to the grid than an electric dryer or pool pump?

we have optional smart meters in Ontario. You can opt in to give them control over your air conditioning. They will limit the temp limits. They can do anything they want in reality. In theory they could just add a fee to anyone household that has a EV registered to it and not even base it on charging use
I'm on a different opt-in program, where they text/email me target windows where they want to reduce energy usage (usually 3-4 hours in the afternoon on a specific day), and I get a credit for any reductions vs. our typical usage. I turn off everything possible during those windows (AC, pool pump, extra refrigerators, etc), and most times wind up with a credit of over $20. |
Just wait until they ban gas cars or come up with a polluter tax if you choose to continue driving one. The rich guys will continue to fly private jets though and govt employees will be paraded in Escalades and Suburbans!

How is taxing charging up your EV at a public fast charger different than taxing gasoline dispensed at a gas station? This was always going to happen.

On my car license tabs, I pay an additional $93 a year on the Tundra for being a heavy, thirsty truck (total license tabs were $693 this year). On the flip-side, I pay a "hybrid" penalty fee of $75 a year for driving the Highlander Hybrid, for a total this year of $597. I cannot win. :D

Was a foregone conclusion, no amount of taxes though are going to equal the cost of gas vs the cost of electricity.

I paid $653 for the GS tabs this year, but there were no additional charges on that car relating to fuel consumption penalties.

go figure. The hybrid has a penalty. And the non hybrid doesn’t. Same size V6. $653 is just register the plate?
