Agreed, I maxed it out yesterday and noticed how clean it sounds. Just lacks bass for my taste. I have always installed 2 12" subwoofers in my vehicles. I'm still debating if I should replace the highs and mids but the subs are a must in my opinion.

I've always been a fan of multiple subs too, but lately I've just been going with a larger single sub. Easier box, easier design, and less weight!

You still have all that extra weight... I took like 12 4 foot long 4x4 wood posts home in my car and it sagged the back down big time. I'm sure a 100+ pound subwoofer box will do the same.
Maybe you can do Baltic birch or fiberglass to cut down weight over MDF.

I love a really clean bass! Several years ago I had a system with 2 10" subs, and it seemed a lot cleaner than my previous sub with 1 12". I assumed that it was more efficient use of the power from the amp. Would that be expected. or was it more a function of the overall system with a bigger amp?
I'm sorta surprised, though. I actually had to turn down the bass on the ML system, but when I did, it sounded surprisingly good.

multiple small subs vs. one large sub have no difference on 'heavy' bass... it's all dependent upon box design and speaker design, and amplifier choice and tuning. A large sub will have more output than a small sub given the same specs, but the bass doesn't have to be 'heavy' from it.

If the 10s are the exact same type as the single 12, they'd probably sound cleaner because they need to move less for the same output, producing less distortion. The more the speaker cone moves, the more distortion it will produce. If the 10s were a different brand, different box, different amp tuning, then more variables were at play.
There are other factors involved, but that is a general explanation.
Bass can be addictive... I got tired of investing money in cars, so I put it all in my living room now I started with a single 10" subwoofer with about 500 watts powering it. Now I have four 18" subwoofers and 4,000 watts! It's the largest amp I could buy without needing to have an electrician wire a new outlet lol

I've never experienced a situation where the amount of bass was well balanced with the highs and mids. The bass always overpowered the highs and mids. Depending on the type of music, mood and overall personal taste that isn't always a bad thing but I generally prefer the balanced sound to a bass biased sound.
Maybe my personal experience is too limited?
I'm also curious what the scoring metrics were for those competitions. If they put a higher importance on lots of bass then of course a system where the lows, highs and mids were more balanced would score lower.

I think your experience is just limited Most people prefer their bass boosted which is probably why the systems you've heard were not balanced. I'd bet 90% of car audio shops out there would install a system with heavy bass. Literally every single shop in a 50 mile radius of me just does one note wonder bass systems.
As far as scoring metrics, they have different types of competitions. They have bass competitions for all loud loudest bass. Those systems generally 'burp' a single frequency extremely loud (like over 150 db). The sound quality competition is judged on sound reproduction, balanced frequencies, no harshness, no distortion, etc. A stereo system that could do those things sounds like one you would like. I did a system with two 12s on about 1500 watts in my Pontiac G8. It shook everything, including my organs lol Took that one out and had an IASCA two-time winner do a complete system in my car... I sure miss that one.
