ES300H...mistakenly leaving car on

I own a 2019 ES300H...my first hybrid. A few times, when I've parked somewhere, my attention gets diverted (i.e.a phone call) and I forget to turn the car off. Because the engine turns off at a stop and everything goes quiet, it's easy to assume that the car is off when it actually is not. Anyone have this happen?

Don't you get a warning chime (and an alert on the multi-information display) if you exit the car with the engine running? I would think that the warning chime would be pretty hard to ignore.

Maybe he drives with his light switch in the "on" position and just ignores it. ;)

Sorry, couldn't resist. :)

The key warning is three (3) relatively quiet chimes, might be mistaken for any of a number
of other more innocuous conditions such and the lights on warning.

The car beeps on the outside when you get out and close the door, and it won't lock. I don't see how you can not realize its running...

Beeping outside means it's on.

Yes...thanks for making me seem half-way intelligent:)...it is easy (for me) to confuse one sound for another. I just exited the car without turning it off and now recognize the sound. Thanks to all of you for pointing that out. That's why we have this great forum.

Oh no, you are fully intelligent...you bought a Hybrid after all!

Don’t sweat it. As long as it wasn’t stolen, no harm was done. With a new car, especially a hybrid and all the extra noises it makes (not to mention the silence when parking), it wouldn’t be a stretch to get confused. I suspect most of us hybrid owners have done it at some point.

If the beeps are a bit quiet for you check if the volume is turned up. The option should be in vehicle settings I believe.

Maybe the ES is different, but my Highlander Hybrid makes a loud “whirring” sound when on, even with the engine off. It’s pretty much as loud as the gas engine at idle. Plus there’s the loud chime on the vehicle exterior when you leave it. So it’s never been an issue for us.

I don't have my ES hybrid yet (special order comes in March) and I didn't think to get out of the car and close the door with it still running but I do currently own a 2011 Toyota Camry Hybrid and if I get out and close the door with the car running there is a very audible beep that indicates the car is on. I can't imagine the new ES doesn't have a similar feature.

TechNut Jan 16, 2019 06:55 PM

The ES does beep when you get out of the car, just like any other Toyota/Lexus hybrid. It doesn’t beep if you left the key in your gym bag in the back seat. My point is there are circumstances where it could easily be missed.

I think, for me, the habit of reaching up to turn off the car is so ingrained that I don't think I'd ever miss it. I've never driven a car where I didn't have to do something to turn it off, whether it be to push the button or turn the key.

This happened a few times to my wife when we first bought her 13 300h, and since I rarely drive her car it happens to me on occasion if I get distracted. I'll figure it out when the car won't lock.
