Any idea why they would choose Beijing over a US-based auto show? |
This article suggests that they are selling at least as many ES 350s in China as they are in the United States, and they intend to expand in that market: http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/bizchin...t_30574421.htm
The target demographic there is much younger than it is here. |

There's a thread on the ES forum as well but it looks like a legit leaked image of the frontend of the new 2019 ES: https://www.motorauthority.com/news/...xus-es-leaked:

The target demographic there is much younger than it is here. China is Lexus' 2nd-largest market, behind the USA... "Our monthly sales in China have exceeded 10,000 units and we are maintaining sound growth momentum. So we forecast our sales this year will surpass last year," said Ezumi. Lexus sold 109,000 cars last year in China, its second-biggest single market in the world after the United States. In the first seven months of the year [2017], sales of the Lexus ES mid-sized sedan reached 31,947 vehicles in China, beating the US as the model's largest single market. Ezumi said Lexus' strategic shift from "a conventional luxury brand to an emotional one with amazing lifestyle experiences" will also help it to boost sales in China where luxury car buyers are much younger than in other major markets in the world. Lexus car owners in China are on average 35 years old, at least 25 years younger than in the US and Japan, according to Ezumi. The market is now mainly dominated by three German marques-Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi. Analysts said that, considering Lexus is not producing cars in China, its current performance is fairly decent. Most luxury carmakers have started production in China, such as the three main German brands, Cadillac and Jaguar Land Rover, as well as Lexus' smaller Japanese siblings Infiniti and Acura. |
What is interesting about Toyota, is that they used (and still do) pride themselves on making cars that were specifically designed for certain markets. It will be sad if this new ES is designed first and foremost for the Chinese market, and the US is considered secondary.
Eventually Lexus will be building this ES in China as well. |
That grille is getting bigger and bigger. Front looks like the LS. If this thing has AWD then 100% GS is done. If China rules the world then we all will be driving FWD based cars with 2.0 4cyl engines. Even BMW and MB have gone full FWD for their cheap cars because they get away with it in China. |

While all the speculation of why Lexus picked the Beijing autoshow over the US autoshow are interesting, I want to put out another factor. Maybe it just fits on their time scheduled better?
I'm guessing this Lexus ES will be released early 2019 as a MY2019 model (I'm think 2019 as MY2019 because the Lexus LS was the same thing - released in 2018 as MY2018.) Also since the Lexus UX is being released in December 2018 as MY2019.

The ES has always seemingly been the little LS - makes sense that the front end looks similar...the LS may be setting the "standard" Lexus design cue this time around...last time it seems it was the '13 GS setting the design cue for the the lineup.

Do you realize that there are people who prefer FWD? There are advantages of having FWD. |

Name 1 please except being cheaper to make. More cargo space Better in snow/rain due to more traction from more weight on the front wheels Better MPG, usually, because they don't require big-drive shaft tunnels to feed power to the rear wheels. And there's probably other reasons as well. Just because you don't like FWD doesn't make it bad. |
