Pretty standard, they used to call these toll booth change holders. You know, back before electronic toll tags were a thing and toll roads were cheap.

I keep change and a small pocket knife and fingernail trimmers in there. It doesn’t rattle. If you leave it open it’ll destroy your knee when you get back in the car.

That’s exactly what I did, lined it so it’s quiet. I use it to hold the remote to my entry gate as the unit is just old enough it won’t connect to the HomeLink buttons. Very handy spot for it.

I usually get a pretty good stash of receipts in there and then when I wipe down the interior and hit the button, remember it's time to empty the compartment. Then I do it all over again
