Default Apple Car Play using voice commands?

Hello folks. I just took delivery of my 2022 ES 350 UL on Saturday. The tech guy at the dealership went through the electronics with me, and we set us Apple Car Play. Music from my phone started playing, as expected however, I was let down that I was not able to change playlists via voice command. The tech guy told me the only way that will work is to have the phone connected via USB cable. Is he correct?

He is correct as you need advanced voice support to do that. Once you hook up the cable to start Apple CarPlay you can use Siri to change playlist. If you want it done wireless you need an aftermarket adapter.

Thanks for your response ionian. My 2021 Chevy will change playlists using voice commands, so I was surprised when the Lexus tech told me my ES 350 would not. I wouldn't have questioned the tech, but he let slip that he had only been in that position for 10 days...

I am guessing your 2021 Chevy equipped with wireless Apple Carplay from factory. Right now ES doesn't do that from factory.

I think the OP might be referring to "Siri Eyes Free" in which you can use voice commands picked up by the car's microphone to control your iPhone's function when connected through bluetooth audio. It is one of the few disappointments because my Acura and Honda have that capability. When I first got into my ES I did a long press on the voice button expecting Siri to beep but it didn't happen. The only way Siri can be voice-activated through the ES is via Carplay connection, either hardwired or through an aftermarket wireless adapter.

Yes, I have a 2021 Corvette, and it has wireless CarPlay. As I mentioned, I was really surprised the Lexus does not...

I used the Siri Eyes Free all the time in my 2015 ES. I was really disappointed when they removed that beginning with the 2019 model year. I don't often bother plugging my phone in to use Apple Carplay so the Siri Eyes Free worked better for that "occasional" use.
