I needed OEM glass. Long story short, it took me 4 months to get the dealer to replace the glass to OEM at their cost due to the purchase being recent.
Any car with front cameras, I now insist on OEM.
Yes. I would even go to say even if the calibration works without a hitch, there is no guarantee that the systems works properly. As the calibration procedure is against close by fixed objects in ideal conditions.
when there is more extreme lighting conditions such as glare or dawn, that’s when it goes hairy.
I had a crack in the ws on my 2019 a year or so ago. Insurance sent me to Safelite (who I have used before for other cars with no problem). I specified the Lexus OEM windshield. 45 min drive there They unwrapped the new ws which was Lexus glass. Then they hooked up their scanner to my car - said they need to confirm everything was okay before they started. They told me the scan showed 3 fault codes and they wouldn’t be able to proceed until I got that fixed… I understood that, but was curious because everything seemed fine with the car - no indication anything was wrong. So I drove back across town to the Lexus dealer with a copy of the printout from Safelite. They checked the car and said everything was perfect and gave me a copy of their printout.. They said they suspected a low voltage issue and that the car is supposed to be running when they do the scan… I’m pretty sure it wasn’t when I was at Safelite (I was standing at the bay door while they did the scan). It was now the end of the day and decided I just wasn’t comfortable going back to Safelite - for fear of a repeat experience.
I called the insurance and ended up having the ws replaced at Lexus at week or so later (and they do it onsite by a tech that just does ws). Only difference for me was I had to pay for the repair and the insurance reimbursed me, less my $100 deductible. It was $2300 - $570 of that was to recalibrate the front camera.
My wife's two month old Venza recently had to get windshield replaced for same reason. Local dealers here outsourced to Safelite. We went straight to safelite and got it done. The cost was about $1,300 including camera calibration. It has been over a week since we got it back and no issue so far.
