Sounds like they had a plastic bag burn onto the exhaust, more common than you'd think.

Had this problem before.

Ran over a piece of Furniture cover clear plastic flying around in road. Very long piece. Thought it went under car and out. Only part of it did. Other part tore, got on exhaust, melted and also wrapped around wheels and brakes.
