When I get involved in helping with a Voice Recognition situation it usually
is caused one of three general misunderstandings:

She doesn't speak (or listen) as fast as we do...either wait till you hear the
chime (and see the icon light up) or press the speech button a second time
before speaking. The first word she hears is critical "Find, Dial, Call, Show..."
and if it is missed you're out of luck.

The microphones are in the ceiling, centered by the sunroof controls on most
Lexi and now over the drivers seat in newer RX's. Do not speak (or yell) at
the steering wheel or mumble at the door glass... Related to this is that noises
that you don't even hear such as the A/C dash vents directed up will mask even
the most articulate speech.

Try "saying what you see" as you learn what to say. 1st press - "Navigation",
2nd press - "Address", 3rd press, "1,8,4,7, Main, Ann Arbor, Michigan". Diction here is
very important, numbers pronounced as with a phone number...one at a time.
We understand "eighteen forty seven" but she needs "one eight four seven".

Only give her the basic street name "Main" WITHOUT any North, South, Court,
Boulevard, Circle, any of that. After she hears Main she will offer choices if available.
"North Main" will get you North Ave everytime... Once you get a handle on what she's looking
for you can speed up...Double press the speech button and "Enter Address one eight
four seven Main Ann Arbor Michigan"

Take the time to download and register Lexus App Suite. It is free forever and links
the superior voice recognition of your smart phone to the Nav. I've put this in numerous
threads and it remains the absolute best way to communicate with the car.

When I tried to do the voice training I can't even finish the sentence before the system tells to me repeat the sentence. Has anyone else come across this? I'm hoping it's just a microphone issue but I should find out more when I bring it to the service department on Saturday.
Suggest you post your query in the RX Forum, rather than here in the 2013 and later ES forum

Service department confirmed it was a faulty microphone issue and once replaced should work fine. I'll update if it doesn't fix the issue.

Agreed. I have a 2017 and I have to first say “navigation” then “enter address” in order for the navigation to enter the address. Otherwise it doesn’t understand what I have said. You have to learn when it recognizes certain commands. At least that’s how it is with the 2017.

Default Lexus VR is DEFECTIVE, and they know it!

If for example I want to use the phone, I push the little button on the steering wheel, and then after getting a voice prompt, in a normal tone of voice ( and I do have a fairly deep voice ) i can say " Call Home"... but instead of calling home, i hear "pardon"... so the next time I say CALL HOME.... honestly it's almost like I have to yell and sound angry... but when I do that it works everytime.. I mean everytime. I* looked thru some of the settings to see if there was some way to "adjust it", but I'm unable to find it. I don't mind raising my voice to get it to work, but I sound kinda stupid yelling at my voice recognition when I have others in the car. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

I wasted 3 months trying to resolve the VR and other issues with Lexus Corp after my dealer (Lexus of Lehigh Valley, PA/Peter Cooper ) told me I was no longer welcome in his property! This was May 2017.

Another 10 weeks of my time was wasted filng a complaint with the State AG's office. They said they can't compel a dealer to do anything...?

However, the dealerships GM replied to the complaint and they put in writing they are aware of the issue but it's not their problem. Funny they didn't mention it before I bought the car.

It was returned five times. Not one person in the dealership could get it to work. They also disconnected my surveillance camera !

Over the past year I only found ONE Lexus employee that knew how to properly use the system. THAT IS PATHETIC.

I took them to court last week and lost! My blood is still boiling so I won't get into the details. The owner shows up to court in torn jeans, an old T shirt and chains. Are you kidding me?

Long story short the problem can not not be fixed!!

Turns out I had been lied to by the corporate office as well. I finally gave up with them and took their $500 service credit. What an insult to consumers.

I had bought this 2013 CPO RX350, which I later found the condition of which was misrepresented. The car had $5500 of body and glass damages, I could not see. When they finally agreed to replace the windshield, they put in a cheap aftermarket glass. I don't see how this is not illegal?

I also found Lexus and their body shop (Duncan in Allentown Pa) are doing many thousands in body damage repairs which they DON'T report to carfax, which is legal and voluntary. I expected much better from Lexus!

I believe a class action suit is in order. Text me, I'm in.. 570 386-1130

BTW,, I bought a 2015 RX350 CPO, and VR works perfectly! I've only seen three of these, all 2015's, that have worked in my year of going to five dealerships and testing over two dozen cars. No one seems to really care.. This is not right!

Update: I traded the car with Bobby Rahal in Mechanicsburg PA . I lost $12,000 on that car, plus legal fees and 14 months of my time. The new car is fantastic !

This was our third purchase from this dealership and I can not believe this guy told us not to come back and wouldn't resolve the problems.

I've yet to even attempt to use my voice recognition in my 2013. I really don't see the need, but that's just me. I'm really surprised you stuck with Lexus after the way you perceived them as a brand over your issue.

I spent months considering buying a different car, especially with how we were treated. The only other brand that made the final cut was Volvo.

I really love everything about the car when it works the way it should. It's like this car was made just for me. If not for the internet sales person (Chad Gould) at Bobby Rahal, who addressed many of my concerns, I do believe I world have given up.

I went to another dealer my mom bought her 2004 RX350 at, a six hour round trip for me. I sat in the car with their service manager and asked him to show me what I was doing wrong with the VR. One command after another didn't work. Yet, he sincerely looks over at me and says, yes, it works. OMG! I didn't go back.

The third dealer I went to I requested their technology specialist to show me how to use the system, in the first car that I came across where the VR did work, and he didn't have a clue how to use it. Neither did the salesman.

I was hesitant to look any further but the salesman at Rahal who also owned a 2013 RX350, had 14 years experience, and did know how it worked. He was also the only guy in 14 months of asking, that knew how to sequentially change the radio stations from the steering wheel.

Its been hell, but now I am extremely pleased with what I have.

Now that I have their statement in writing, seems to me a good law firm should be able to get Lexus owners restitution.

I can't believe this defect has been an ongoing issue for over five years.

$600 smart phones work perfectly. Why not a nearly $50k car!

The voice recoginition on my 2015 ES 350 works properly and as it should. Perhaps one out of 30 times it says "pardon" and I repeat the command and it works. I find it quite handy for navigation in particular.

I note that some of the complaints here are on the RX 350 VR. I presume both use the same system, but it would be better for those with RX350 problems to use the forum dedicated to that model instead of the ES 350

I bought a 2015, which is the only year RX350 I found VR worked.

I used to perform engineering integration on vehicle infotainment systems. Speech Rec is bad on most all production vehicles right now. Some are just worse than others.
Speech rec on your phone works much better because you talk directly into the microphone, plus the phone is accessing the internet to figure out what you are saying. Over the next few model years, the vehicles will upload your speech through the vehicle's internet connection, the sound will get processed on a high speed compute system in the company's back office, then it will send back a MUCH more accurate guess as to what you said.

Press speech button, wait, say the verb "tune" and then the frequency (not the call letters) followed by the band "FM".
"Tune 93.1 FM", "Tune Satellite Channel Bluesville", "Tune 780 AM".
Advanced class on Voice Recognition for you 2015, "Raise Temperature" (driver's side temp will go up 4 degrees)
