5000mi service- skip or go?
Hello everyone, I finally hit the 5000mi milestone and am wondering if I should take my 2016 ES for just a tire rotation? The last time I was there they weren't the most helpful and others have commenting on dealership upselling...I want to take good care of my car but I don't want to take it in for routine ck and tire rotation and come out with other issues. Should I just wait for the 10000mi with oil change?, too long? If I don't go will have to figure how to turn off the maintenance reminder...I'm a new owner to plans to keep this car for quite awhile...so appreciate any insight from you long time ES owners. Thanks!

I have a 200 mile round trip to the nearest Lexus dealer. I'm not interested in making that drive just to get what is essentially nothing more than a free tire rotation.
If I felt a real need to rotate the tires at 5000 mile intervals, I'd just take the car to a local tire shop and pay them $10-15 to rotate the tires, but I've always rotated my tires at closer to 10,000 mile intervals with no ill-effects regarding premature tire wear. When I had the tires rotated on my 2013 ES at around 8500 miles, there was about 1/32 more wear on the front tires. When I had them rotated again around 17,000 miles, the wear had evened out, and all four tires had virtually identical amounts of tread left. For me, that 8,500 mile interval coincided with 1 year time intervals, which is when I had the oil changed, but I would have been comfortable going up to 10,000 miles between tire rotations.
If you do skip the 5000 mile service and tire rotation, however, I would suggest visually checking the tires to make sure that there is no uneven wear that would indicate the need for an alignment or wheel balancing. Also, obviously, if there were any other issues that you had noticed with regard to how the car is performing, I wouldn't suggest skipping the 5000 mile service.
One of the things that also could be done at the 5000 mile service would be to change some of the "dealer only" personalized settings without being charged for doing so. When I took my ES in for the 10,000 mile service (at 8500 miles), they still changed some of those settings for me without charging me, and, many can change those settings themselves, either with the Carista smart phone app or Toyota TechStream.
So, for me, the bottom line would be that, unless there was some problem with the car, I wouldn't be interested in making a special trip to the dealer for the 5000 mile service. Also, if you do go, first make note of what is supposed to be done at 5000 miles, according to the manual, and don't let the dealer's service department add on and charge you for additional services.

Other than the tire rotation at 5k miles, the service dept is supposed to check fluid levels and other misc inspections. Probably a good idea to have Lexus do that unless you are watching these things yourself. You can also enjoy the free coffee and donuts too .
As for resetting the maintenance light yourself here is a link: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/es-...50-2014-a.html

I'd recommend taking it in. You have a new car. Not just rotating the tires, but they'll check everything out to make sure the car isn't a lemon, etc. You can skip the other 5K intervals but I'd go for the first--and it should be free anyways.

Agreed. It can't hurt and it's a good time address any initial niggles or questions etc.

The dealer is 15 miles away so maybe I'll stop by if I'm in the area. Any thoughts about the 10000 oil change are people feeling with the new guidelines or requesting a change earlier? Thx again

Unless you drive the car under severe conditions. I wouldn't worry about 10K mile oil change interval. Today's oil is rather chemical soup than just oil.
If interested you can have engine oil analysis done to make sure nothing unusual is going on inside your engine.

Thanks for for the reassurance that's what I've heard but I know some that do it at 7500 and don't wait longer even with synthetic but if it's in the manual I guess we should follow it. Will at least to stop by for the 5000 check then. Don't mean to sound like a skeptic about dealerships but some past experiences have just made me lose trust but I know they're the experts on our cars

Both local Lexus service manager's told me that they use a bulk oil for their changes. They told me the name of the oil and can not remember. I had heard of it but was certainly not a major brand. If one goes in to buy oil they get Toyota's synthetic which I have read on CL is made by Mobil 1. I buy my five gallon jug of Mobil 1 from Walmart for $22 and take it to my local Toyota dealer who charges me $20 in labor. My filters, I buy from Lexus Parts World for $5. Use cl5 for a 10% discount.

I should clarify that, in my earlier post, my thoughts on skipping the 5000 mile service are based on being 100 miles from the Lexus dealership, and they are also premised on there not being any problems with car that I wanted the dealer to address.
I'm certain that, if I was only 15 miles from the dealership, I'd be going in for the 5000 mile service if, for no other reason, to be taking advantage of the tire rotation. Further, if I had any issues with the car, any squeaks, rattles, etc., I wouldn't even be waiting for the 5000 mile service. Instead, I'd be getting those issues addressed immediately.
