Default Parking Brake Warning light

My parking brake warning light won't turn off. I checked the brake (pressed and released a few times). Checked the brake fluid (it is right under max). 9800 miles on it. Is anyone else having a similar issue?

I haven't had the issue, but my suggestion would be to connect the car to an OBD scanner, which should tell you what the malfunction code is. Once you have the code number, you can do a Google search to find out what it means.

If you don't want to pay the dealer to pull the code, you can stop by any of the chain auto parts stores, like Advance Auto, and they will let you use their code scanner. Also, you can pull the codes with the Carista smart phone app and the appropriate OBD wireless hardware or with Toyota TechStream software.

Also, if you re-set the code when you have the scanner connected and if the parking brake light doesn't come back on, you can assume that the malfunction was registered in error.

The usual cause of a brake warning light is that a sensor detects a problem in the brake system. It would be foolish to assume that the problem is only a defective sensor. There could be an actual problem in the brakes, in which case the vehicle would be dangerous to drive. The owners manual says to park the car and contact the dealer, for that reason.

While the car is under warranty, any problem in the brakes (or in the sensors) should certainly be covered. So have the dealer diagnose and repair the problem.

From the manual, you may have a problem:
Brake system warning light (warning buzzer)*
• Low brake fluid
• Malfunction in the brake booster system
This light also comes on when the parking brake is not released.
If the light turns off after the parking brake is fully released the
system is operating normally.

Take it to the dealer, it's under warranty! While you're there, have your free 10k service performed.

Good advice. Time for a 10k checkup anyway...
