Default Oil Change

I know oil changes ( when to do them ) have been discussed on this forum and the debate over whether to do them at 5 or 10K miles rages on... Apparently Lexus recommends every 10K miles..I've been changing my oil every 5K for a long long time, and that wasn't about to change...... anyway I took the car in today for an oil change and told the service writer I wanted an oil change, and that I knew the free service was at 10K so I would just pay for this service at 5K out of my own pocket.... Told her I even purchased my own mobil 1 synthetic and that it was in the trunk... without hesitation she said not to worry about it, that they would just go ahead and change my oil and the other 5K stuff they do and they wouldn't charge me for it... told me to keep the oil I bought til my 10K oil change... of course I was fine with this, but was a little surprised because I had heard that Lexus would not do the free service until 10K.... thought some of you guys who are coming up on 5K miles might want to know this.....

Sometimes dealers will surprise you, in a good way. I was due for a 15k service, but i had a coupon special for an oil change. So instead of the standard 15k service, I figured I might as well get the oil change instead. There was no hassle and they did everything recommended for the 15k for free except for the tire rotation. What's not to like?

you have two complimentary service for the car that is basically the first 5k and 10k. It's just basically oil change and tire rotation. Wait till after 10k and you don't want to go back to the dealership.

It cost me $250 for a service which includes oil change, oil filter, air filter, cabin air filter and tire rotation.

They will charge you $25 for tire rotation. Which I get it free at America's Tire.

Interesting. So you must have had the 20K service? For my synthetic oil and filter change, and vehicle inspection, I paid $75 at the dealer. Your dealer charged you $150 to change the air filter and cabin filter? Wow . Then again, that may be the going rate in Calif. for the 20K service.

Depending upon whether one wants a genuine factory replacement part or an aftermarket name brand filter, the difference in cost is phenomenal. I changed the cabin filter in my Avalon, took about 15 minutes, cost for a Purolator was less than $20.00. Toyota wanted $60. The Lexus is even easier to do. The air filter is less than $10.00 and takes about 5 minutes to change. I know most don't want to change their oil themselves, but to do so with a Fram cartridge @ $6.99 and Pennzoil Platinum synthetic 0W20 (6 quarts) is about $32.00 at Walmart. I do these things in the spring, summer, and fall. Gives me great satisfaction to do it myself and even greater satisfaction not to pay Lexus prices.

Bob- Good point. The parts from Lexus are outrageous, and the time for them to check or replace are mere minutes. Parts from AutoZone, O'Reily's or Amazon are probably 1/4 of the dealers. If I was to replace the air filter and cabin filter, it would cost me about $30 and 10 minutes of my time. I'll be certain to do this before my 20K service.

Changing the oil and oil filter isn't something I like to do. I've gotten enough oil down my arm and dirt under my nails during my lifetime of doing oil changes. Now I'd let someone else do the messy work. I'm willing to pay $50 for a regular oil change or $75 for the synthetic oil change, but I can't see myself paying those exorbitant prices to replace the air filters, so that's all I will do. I guess I'm being a bit lazy but not crazy.

I get it Art. It's matter of choice regarding the oil changing. Definitely a dirty job and the oil always seems to go down your arm...With the Lexus its only once a year for me so that's a plus. I have to admit that sliding under a car is getting old. (And so am I). The other filter changes are a walk in the park...
