Not 100% following, but are you saying you no longer have a 2013, and you can now lock the keys in the car on your 2014? I ask, because your signature shows a 2014.

Page 133 of the '14ES owners manual lists several conditions that may cause the door locks to malfunction. One specific condition mentioned is car washes where large amounts of water can contact the doors. Some other possibilities include stray electronic signals that make the outside sensor think the fob is outside the car so it might lock if someone touches a handle.

Seriously - it's just a matter of time before I do something like that.

Anyways - a girl can hope. I still haven't figured out half the features of the car and it was worth asking.

A simple habit that has always worked for my wife and me is that once the engine is off and all the doors that will be opened have been opened, we just automatically press the door lock button in the drivers door and all of the doors then lock when closed. This way you don't have to remember to pull out the key fob each time.

Neat! I'll try that next time. I know that pressing the lock on the key fob before the doors are closed doesn't work, so this would be a nice trick.

If you lock the doors with the lock button on the driver's door, does the security system arm itself the same way as it would if you were to lock the doors with the fob or with the dimples on the door handle? I haven't bothered to check the manual to see how it works with the ES, but I know that, with some other vehicles that I've had, if you locked the doors with the button on the driver's door, it did not arm the security system.

For me, the easiest way to lock the doors has been just to touch the dimple on the exterior door handle. It is simple. It doesn't require me to pull out the fob, and it is an easy habit to get into. In fact, I got into the habit of doing that so quickly that, when I'm driving my GX, when I get out of the vehicle, my hand reaches to touch the dimple (which it doesn't have) on its door handle, and I briefly wonder why the doors didn't lock.

I just discovered yesterday that I can lock one key fob in the car by using the 2nd fob to remotely lock the doors.

When I got my pre-delivery orientation to the vehicle, I was told by the dealer's delivery specialist to make sure not to leave a fob in the vehicle because, when a fob is in the vehicle, there is continuous communication between the fob and the vehicle, and, if a fob is left in the vehicle over an extended period of time, that communication can drain both the vehicle's battery and the battery in the fob.

Great idea, but too dangerous for me. My other two Lexus don't have the keyless starter, and I'll bound to forget to take the key out of the ignition and lock it in the car right after I close the door and reach for my remote ...

I don't think you have to worry about that happening because the car won't let you do that. If the key is in the ignition and if you press the lock button on the door while the door is open, the door will not lock. That is the way it is on my GX, and I'm confident that it works the same way with other Lexus (and other manufacturer's) vehicles that don't have a keyless starter.

On the other hand, if you happen to leave your keys sitting on the seat or elsewhere inside the vehicle, it would still be possible to lock your key/fob in the car.

@lesz, when I tried locking the doors using the door button yesterday, it seemed to actually arm the vehicle. I say that because when I returned to the vehicle and grabbed the door handle it beeped twice when it unlocked the doors.

HAHA! Yeah exactly. I'm the one who tore the bumper off my car when I hit my sons car. I never underestimate my stupidity.... that's just asking for trouble.
