You might be noticing the HID bulbs igniting and turning on. I don't notice any leveling whatsoever on my ES. On both my Audis that have the auto leveling, you can distinctly tell when it does it. First the passenger side will dip and adjust, then the driver. This was on a car with cornering lights and one without, same outcome. Pretty positive the Lexus doesn't have it as I don't see any motor or gearing to run the stabilization.
But if it's not leveling, why this note on p. 226 in the '13 manual? (what other option is there?)
■Automatic headlight leveling system (if equipped)
The level of the headlights is automatically adjusted according to the number of passengers
and the loading condition of the vehicle to ensure that the headlights do not
interfere with other road users.

Could be, but in the garage there is definitely a very slight up then down, you may be right that they are just powering on and creating that appearance. Definitely high pitch buzzing, however.

My my take on the 'auto' leveling feature not found on the current ES.

HID questions
Thank you Jollick for taking the photos, even though not on my dealer window sticker, it looks like my UL ES300h is equipped with HID headlights based on your photos.
