Just an FYI, the Avalon drives stiffer than the ES. I have driven them both and was not impressed with the Avalon. Both are very similar cars but the Avalon is still a Toyota and the ES a Lexus. With that said parent company Toyota cannot and will not let the Avalon outshine the ES. The only thing I see that the Avalon has over the ES is the wireless cellphone character.

For some reason, locally where I am, they will negotiate a better deal on the ES Hybrid vs. the Avalon Ltd. Hybrid. I think it could be a supply and demand issue. That said, the Avalon's interior is slightly nicer than the ES's. The color scheme's, availability of black carpeting with a brownish interior, and real leather have something to do with it. Overall, I liked the Lexus package better, and "it's a Lexus".

To my knowledge, there's no need to use premium in the ES Hybrid.

That is interesting because there is actually a significantly greater markup from invoice to MSRP on the Avalon than there is on the ES. While the markup for the base vehicles is fairly close, the markup on options for the Avalon is 3-4 times as big as it is for the ES. That being the case, the Toyota dealers should have about $3000 more negotiating room relative to MSRP for a nicely equipped Avalon than Lexus dealers have for a similarly equipped ES.

id go for the extra few $$ and go for the Es300h. i work as a product specialist at a lexus dealer. the new 2014 ES is a really beautiful car and was just totally redesigned. i was never a huge fan of the ES personally until i drove one of the new ones that just came in. i was really really shocked at just how nice they are now! hell id buy one if i could afford it lol. anyway the ES is indeed a very classy car and worthy of the lexus name, and it has all kinds of really cool features. anyway if you get the avalon just remember it wont ever be a lexus. the ES will have alot more refinements than the avalon, and if you look hard enough, you can even get one with the panorama glass roof! either way im intrested in seeing what you go for.

Guys, my wife and I are looking to trade the G37 into an ES300h or Avalon. Her argument is if we're going for gas mileage, then Avalon uses regular vs. super unleaded for ES.

FYI - The ES uses REGULAR fuel - not Super unleaded.

You can look all you want, but you won't find an ES300 with a panoramic roof.

I was in a similar boat. The 2013 avalon hybrid is a very nice car and most expert reviewers would recommend that over the lexus es 300h as the cars are very similar. I recall seeing a interior sound rating of 59.8 db for the avalon (very guiet!), does anyone know of the reading on the lexus?

I was leaning towards the 2013 avalon hybrid touring but ended with 2013 lexus es 300h which was $4k higher. The Lexus did not have the navigation, had nulux instead of leather but probably has some more features like safety connect for 1y etc. The main reason why I didnt chose the avalon was that Toyota had a stop sale on all cars due to heated seats issue and the dealer couldn't tell me how long that will take - they could'nt give me a loaner.

I am happy with my lexus purchase. I think the $4k was worth as the lexus is more reliable than the toyota (made in Japan vs USA I know the difference is not as great nowadays but still CR always ranks Lexus #1).

They are both nice cars and very similar. Lexus "rewards" you with more bragging rights, a better warranty and service, but I'm not sure it's worth the price differential.

One big difference for me was the extensive use of chrome in the Avalon interior - especially on the driver's door where my leg often touches. In the South in summer, that chrome is going to be VERY hot - I know this because I test drove one on a hot day and it didn't take me long to get my leg away from the door. Less importantly, I'd expect low-angle sun reflection off the chrome to be annoying.
