I need some ideas here...

I want to lock my smart key (less the metal 'key' ) in the car.

any idea's on how to do this?

I tried putting the key in a couple metal foil bags, with no luck.

my last resort will be to pull the battery out of the smart key...

-the reason is I like to go to the beach and scuba dive.


any ideas?

You could always put it in a waterproof bag and take it with. That, or get a copper box to put it in. Not sure tinfoil is a good enough RF blocking material.

copper? are you sure that will work?

I'm willing to go buy some 2" copper pipe with end caps, but its not going to be cheap... so would hate to waste $ if not sure...

no I don't want to take it out on the boat/kayak.

(I can't even hide it under the car, like on older cars)

Leave the smart key at home and just take the metal key.

What I did is: ordered a flat key from the dealer (that is compatible with the billfold accessory case) so it will fit in my billfold key slot. Or use the original key, if you don't mind the bulk of the angled head. Then I wrapped the smart key in three wraps of heavy duty Reynolds Wrap. Since I am single and had an extra smart key, I wanted a permanent emergency hidden key, in case mine was stolen or lost during a trip. Then I inserted it into an old eye glass or cell phone belt clip case. Since mine is permanent, I looked for a place to clip it, where a mechanic (& such) isn't likely to run across it. Maybe behind the trunk trim, or under a seat. The flat key will give access to both places. Then, I remove the original smart key from my pocket and placed it far enough away so that it isn't being sensed. The front corner of the garage did it for me, as the sensors are pretty much localized. Then, I checked all door handles and trunk opener for lock and unlock. None would work. Then, I put my primary smart key in my pocket and all was good. Three months, now, and no lock malfunctions.

I will try the mulit aluminum foil wrap and see how that works out.

I also like to hide a spare key under my car... it has saved me more than 1x....

Page 129 of the Owner's Manual, Electronic Key Battery-Saving Function. Press unlock twice while holding the lock button. Confirm fob shut down by observing four (4) flashes from the fob.

Now you can slip the mechanical key out of the fob, leave the fob (out of sight) in the car and carry the small key. When you return just let yourself into the car with the mechanical key, press any button on the fob to wake it up and you're off!

Very good to know, also easy and simple to remember... Nice to be able to only take the mechanical key which is 1) a lot easier to stash 2) can be fully submerged in water

You can start the car with the metal key. I believe you just hold it up to the start button and push the start button.

You have to hold the fob/ plastic electronic key, emblem side to button, not just the metal key. If the battery in the key is dead, for example, you hold the fob next to the button. The metal key unlocks the driver door so you can get in.

-I have a dry box, I put a gps in it, and it sort of stays dry. but when diving I open the box to see my coordinates, and every once in a while a wave soaks me.

at 200+ a pop I want to keep the key dry.

-no runners here? same issue.

I put my fob into a ziploc bag, which I put in the key pocket of my running shorts.
