Yes. I use Mobil 1in mine but would like to know if there's a better synthetic...recommendations anyone?

I have a 2013 350 and after the free oil change I plan to use 5W20 regular oil. The engine in the Lexus is the same as my 2006 Avalon that used 5W20 which was recommended by Toyota.

there was a long thread on toyota spec oil. reportedly its composition is specified by the factory.

and there is a difference. how much and what does it really mean, I don't really know.


I would only use a full synthetic, but kinda doubt it would make any difference which brand.

Yes and with 0w20 synthetic oil manufactured by Exxon/Mobil to Toyota specs.
It's not the same formula as Mobil 1 but Mobil 1 can be used.

Why not go with 0W20 as recommended now? 2006 was a long time ago. From the manual:

Oil grade: ILSAC GF-5 multigrade engine oil
Recommended viscosity: SAE 0W-20
SAE 0W-20 is the best choice
for good fuel economy and good
starting in cold weather.
If SAE 0W-20 is not available,
SAE 5W-20 oil may be used.
However, it must be replaced
with SAE 0W-20 at the next oil
change.

Like most owners I wish to use an oil to give me good economy, cold weather performance AND the best engine protection. I've been using a 5-30 synthetic in my 07ES which has always been parked outside in the North NJ winters since 2006 and never had a starting issue in the cold. So I wonder if continuing to use a 5-30 rather than a 0-20 in my newly acquired 14ES might be best for engine wear, even if I am giving up a little in fuel economy. I wonder also whether using 5-30 would void the warranty. Finally, having not yet taken possession of the 14ES I am wondering whether Lexus for the sake of decreasing car weight has decreased the battery size (resulting also in a decrease in output) since an 0-20 engine would be slightly easier to turn over in the cold than a 5-30 engine.

It might impact FE very slightly but I don't see how it would impact warranty since in some respects your giving better protection. 10-20 actually scares me a little in a hot environment like here in south tx. I need to check the manual for specs according to driving conditions to get ready for summer. Suggest you check too.

All the specs in the manual says is that a higher viscosity may be called for in cases of higher speeds or heavy loads. I still plan on asking the dealer about our local conditions. Summer here in stop and go traffic is brutal. I do know that the Toyota dealership used 5-30 dino in my 2007 Camry Hybrid and it is essentially the same engine.

Personally I have always used mobil 1 full synthetic.... but I have heard ( no personal knowledge ) that Royal Purple makes a great product. Might be something to look into.

There might be a "better" synthetic but they won't make your car run any better or last any longer, but they will cost more.

Let's see if you have a super computer and PhD's in mechanical and chemical engineering and you have all the Lexus data on the engine design/construction then you might take a chance and use something other then what Lexus recommends if that is what your analysis determines. Otherwise I would stick with what the owners manual recommends. Another approach would be to take recommendations from people you don't know on the Internet versus Lexus recommendation. About the battery being smaller, your not going to believe this but industry seems to be making more and more things smaller and more powerful all the time. . Sorry I can't help myself
