Default Run Flat tires?

I just purchased the ES350 couple of weeks ago. Wanted to know if it comes with run flat tires or not?

Mine with the 18's didn't.

Not sure I ever heard of those as an option.

Pretty sure ES' don't come with run flats. You wouldn't want them anyways. I hear they ride very stiff.

Does not. That's a good thing.

Agreed on both counts.

Take a peek in the trunk and if you have a spare - No run flats.

Not on my ES hybrid. I've driven them on BMW's, and they are tolerable. Actually had one lose some pressure, but not so much that they had to be scrapped. Apparently after a very short distance of zero pressure they ought not be re-pressurized.

Get a price and availability and you may not want them. Imagine getting a flat on a road trip and in the middle of nowhere.

Runflats are in my opinion only good for those who never leave a metropolitan area - somewhat like me - but I still don't want them. I believe they are good for 50 miles at moderate (low) speeds and then you may have to wait to get a new one in the correct size. A friend was surprised to fine that he had them on a new Mustang and did not take my advice to buy some kind of a spare before departing on a 1500 mile road trip. He, like a lot of us, had not had a tire problem on the road for maybe 20 plus years so he did not do it. Sure enough about 150 miles from his destination he hit a rock which destroyed the tire and he spent a couple of days in some little town getting a tire shipped in. A little drastic but rather than buy a spare he sold the car.

Dave- That is very drastic. Do all Mustangs come with runflats? A shame if that's the case. Even in the City or burbs, I've averaged a flat every year or two because of all the construction around town. It's a pain to wait to get it repaired, but that's cheap. Imagine if you had to buy new runflats every couple of years?

Arty - I think it may just be the mustang convertibles that have only runflats. And the trunk is pretty small to be carrying a spare on a road trip but I would have had one even if in the back seat which can be quite dangerous in a collision.

My experience on a Mini Cooper S was that they were very stiff, be that good or bad, and the postings on the Mini boards indicated nobody will fix them, not even just a nail in the mid-tread. Very expensive and limited availability, as mentioned before. There was an AutoWeek long term review on a 5 series BMW (as I recall--last year) and they had a number of replacements over the year, which was the big negative on the car.
