Default Cruising Range

Greetings, Does anyone know how the cruising range is actually calculated on the dashboard computer? In my '07 ES350 the range was always around 400 miles after a fill up. With my new '13 ES350 the first couple of times I filled up the range calculated out to be about 373. That would be correct given the smaller gas tank in the '13 ES. However, it's been going down ever since. I filled up the other day, when the computer said my remaining range was about 59 miles, and after filling up, the range only went to 323. this is kind of ridiculous. As I said, in my old car it was always practically the same, or only changed by 4 or 5 miles. The swings in my new car are outrageous.

Any thoughts?

Regards, Scott

The fuel tank holds 17.2 gallons for the 13, just a little over a gallon less than your 07. This should only change the estimate by about 20-25 assuming you have been averaging in the 20-25 mpg range. The cruising range is an estimate based on the way you drive. Have you been exceeding this estimate? It doesn't sound like you are.

I believe the cruising range is 'averaged' out over several fill ups and will increase (assuming your average MPG warrants the increase). What has been your actual fuel economy average for the first two tanks (based on the on-board computer)? What did you typically average with your 07?

Picking a nit, but the Operators Manual and Maintenance specs say the tank is 17.0 gallons, though brochures say 17.2. I'd go with the technical manuals, of 17.0. Having said that, I ran my first fill (new, at seven miles), to the filler cap. I drove it until the fuel gage was dead center on "Empty". The "Miles to go" quit indicating miles (at a little over "0") and said "Please refuel!". I put in 17.312 gallons. So, I'm going with a 17.0 gallon tank and maybe up to one-half gallon filler tube, or so. Anyway, my gage seems to be dead-on at the "Empty" mark, which is nice to know. This is on a ES300h. The mileage on that tank was 668. Fort Worth town driving, for the most part. I refueled again at 273 miles, on 12/31/12, because I keep a spreadsheet on yearly fuel data. So, with 941 (gas miles, 948, total) miles on the car, the computer said 39.942 mpg and the refuel computed at 38.169. That accuracy isn't bad, reading 4.648% high. If I take my computer mileage and multiply it by 0.9556, it will be the actual value. I'm interested to hear what speed limit high speed cruising mileage is at 80 mph (west TX) and 75 mph (NM & AZ), as that's where I do most of my traveling. I don't expect to check it myself until next spring, but I'm guessing that it'll drop to 34 mpg, or so. Anyone know, for the hybrid (refuel values)?

Your range is calculated by YOUR average mile per gallon. So, its based on the way you drive.
