well, technically, the engine is the same engine that's been in toyota camry/avalon/rav4/highlander for many years (at least 3+) with some exceptions.
the manual says that you can use unleaded. I plan doing 2 tanks of unleaded and then 1 tank of premium just to keep it "clean"
not necessary, but it's the thought that counts

86K on my wives 2007 ES350. We have run regular its whole life. When I do the oil change I put a bottle of Chevron Tettron in the tank. My wife gets 24 to 26 mpg in town. We get 29 to 31 on the highway with me driving. No reason to run premium gas.

I am most certainly not an engineer but I don't think premium unleaded is "cleaner" than regular unleaded gasoline.
I have often put premium in the tank looking for better performance but truly can not see either a performance or mileage difference.
I do occasionally put a can of Techron in the tank but again don't see any effect.

Yes, the recommendation is regular gasoline only. I have read about the aktinson engine which is the engine used in this model as well as the toyota camry hybrid. With going into alot of technical detail. This engine was made to handle the lower octane fuel. i even read where some thought that e85 could also work. i would not attempt doe to this not being recommended by the manufacturer. i suggest reading about the atkinson engine. It's very informative.

Premium fuel burns slower thus is actually a more dirty burn unless you have the proper cyl pressure to use the high octane fuel to it's full or close to it's upper potential so in actually it does the exact opposite as you may think.
In other words anything other than regular is a waste and may be harmful in the long run.

ES 350 owners, what gas do you use?
It's still shocking to me that the ES 350 does not require premium gas. My state's gas station sells 87, 89 and 92 what would you guys recommend I use? Would it hurt the car even if I put premium in there?
