I think the lack of Adaptive Headlights was just another one of the cost-cutting measures that were taken on the new ES, along with cheaper plastics on the door panels and the loss of the engine cover. This, I believe, was done to keep the MSRP of a typically equipped ES in the "sweet spot" of the low to mid $40K range. I did a rather lengthy post a while back about the declining value of the dollar in relation to the yen which suggests why some of the lesser-noticed features are being cheapened or eliminated.

I would like to think that if/when ES production is moved to North America, this trend will be reversed.

I don't miss the adaptive headlights I had on my 2007ES & 2012RX
What I do miss very much is the intelligent auto dimming high beams that I had on my 2012RX

@my100th - the Auto Hi Beam feature is neat and is now coupled with Lane Departure Alert on 2013 ES models. However, that seems only available on the "luxury" option set, whereas on the "ultra luxury" set, it is not offered. I got the former on a new ES300h, and would have liked the driver seat extender, too - but that only comes with the latter. Win some, lose some. Kind of wish Lexus would allow more flexibility.

Jolllick - Wow - I must have missed it in the configuration app on the Lexus site; thought for sure that with the UltraLux version, one could get the seat extender, but not the auto hi-beam, which is coupled (I believe) with the LDA (lane departure alert). Good for you!

I think all the ES models should come with both, auto hi-beam and the seat extender. The new Toyota Avalon hybrid model has a technology package that zero's in on the most wanted features - both aforementioned are included and with other goodies - brother Lexus should take the good example and run with it.

i currently have a loaner with the adaptive swivel lights and i really like them. at the very least, they are entertaining. the squirrels and other small animals in my neighborhood (with curvy roads) will have one less thing to fear at night, at least while i have the loaner,

"I think the lack of Adaptive Headlights was just another one of the cost-cutting measures "

These were an option is the older ES models and it would have been nice to leave them as an option for the current models.

Were Adaptive Headlights an option or just included in the HID option?
I believe AFS (Adaptive Front Lighting) was included with a button to turn the feature on and off..

I think you are correct. HID's only came as Adaptive, there wasn't an alternative choice.

The HID headlamps were not standard on the ES350. So it could have (and should have IMHO) been an option on the 2013 models as it would not raise the base price of the car.

I know.I have owned two ES350 with the HID option.
Your post looks like you meant the AFS feature and not the HIDs.
AFS is not available probably because of cost cutting.I agree the AFS should be included in the HID option.
Again,I have AFS and don't feel it's a big thing,though.
