Extended Warrenty

Hi All,

Need some opinions, I purchased a 2018 ES 350 back in April 2019 and didn't opt for the extended warranty. Now that my car is going on 3 years the end of this month should I pick it up? It has 16K currently on it and Lexus has been on me since the beginning of the month to call for pricing and coverage. Pros/Cons?

Regards,
fdiphill

Let's see...the best, most reliable car for a number of years...nah, you don't need an extended warranty. :) I have a 2014 ES/UL (six years old, single owner) and haven't had issues beyond normal maintenance (OK, two recalls, but they were free!) These cars should be nearly defect free for a good 10 years or so. Search the forum and you'll see lots of folks discussing this with a large bend towards "you do not need the warranty".

Save your money. Plan a nice trip with your wife or significant other with the money when the virus BS is over... Don't get sucked in by the dealer... They make almost pure profit off these policies. Do a search on this forum and you'll see.

Extended warranties are among the biggest profit generators for dealerships.

The markups on extended warranties are several hundred percent greater than the expected payout from the extended warranty.

Yes, there is a (small) chance that you could have a covered repair whose cost exceeds the price of the extended warranty, but that is very unlikely.

Instead of buying an extended warranty, put the money that you would have spent on the extended warranty into a savings account designated for car repairs, and, over the course of ownership of 4 or 5 cars, it is almost certain that you will be several thousand dollars ahead of where you would have been had you bought extended warranties for those 4 or 5 cars.

Also, note that there is a reason why "Lexus has been on me since the beginning of the month to call for pricing and coverage", and the reason is not that they care about whether you are protected against the cost of car repairs.

When I replace my car (always with another Toyota product) and the salesman (or finance person) asks me to purchase the extended warrantee my answer is always the same...."Why do you think I'm buying a Toyota product?" They usually give up at that point. Hasn't failed yet.

My advice is don't buy the extended warranty. Nothings 100% Guaranteed not to go wrong, but these cars are really reliable. I did not buy the warranty when I bought my 2013 ES new. In fact, when I was about ready to agree to buy the car, I told the salesman to make sure the finance dept. guy didn't try to pressure me to buy an extended warranty. Happy to say the guy never even mentioned it.

If you had purchased a BMW or Benz, I may consider extended warranty but a Lexus or Toyota. I would chance it. Honda/Acura is marginal given thought given their reliability has gone down.

i have alpha warranty services and they paid to have the mirror on the passenger door replaced when it started to leak didn't try to send a used mirror they paid like 550 for the OEM glass and 100 for the labor
so far I have not needed anything else got it 37k on the car 2016 now have 93k and it will expire at 125k and I feel so far I'm good but if I don't need anything else on it between now and 125k then ill feel dumb for buying a plan for 2500 when I bought the car.

for now on my next Lexus will be a certified one and ill probably extend that only because I can extend up to 6 years unlimited mile warranty from Lexus and well the rate I drive ill have a 4 year old Lexus with 250k on it and still being services under warranty when that time comes

As members posted above the Lexus and especially ES are soooooo reliable. On our second ES and never had either back for anything other than routine maintenance. If you have 16,000 miles on a three year old car you especially do not need an extended warranty. Enjoy your savings and pat yourself on the back for a wise purchase.

I had to laugh. Someone in Finance is losing sleep at night because you do not have extended warranty coverage. I have been debating this for my 2016 Lexus that I purchased in 2019 with only 16 K miles on it ad 13 months of warranty left. The only major concern I have is a problem with the technology package. A friend of mine who has a repair shop charges me about 6 bucks including excellent synthetic oil and does everything the dealership would do.....for what, something like $400.

I am going through this right now but my 2016 purchased in 2019 with 13 months warranty and 16 K miles had been in a minor accident and hadd had some kind of engine work done on it ver early on....was only 25 K out the door. When I purchased it, there were some problems with the tech package but they were repaired before i received it and thank God I have not had any serious problems since I purchased the car....other than being hit by others here in crazy road rage driver DC metro area! The roof moulding came off in a car wash and I just purchased two clips for ten thousand dollars each....no, just kidding....about 3 bucks for two of them....so like others, I am not sure the warranty is worth it.

Let's face it, neither Lexus or other companies that sell insurance are selling them because they are doing you a favor. They make a bundle on them!

I bought a 8 year 125K extended warranty on my 2007 Lexus RX350 with No Factory Nav. from Lexus of Shreveport, Louisiana. Speak to the guy by the name of Toby. They sell the warranties very cheap. The repairs I had paid for itself 5 times over. Well worth it.

I will be purchasing the same extended warranty for my 2017 ES350 when the base factory warranty expires from Lexus of Shreveport. It has on-board NAV and I know things can go wrong, especially since I will be keeping this vehicle for at least that long.

That's interesting.. curious, your location shows NJ, but you say you bought the warrranty from Lexus of Shreveport. I live in Shreveport and bought my ES at the same dealership.. Personally I did not buy an extended warranty so I'm not privy to the different ways to buy one. How did you end up buying your warranty in Shreveport... did you buy your car there also?

Roland,
Club Lexus has been mentioning this Lexus of Shreveport contact since 2008. Toby sells this extended warranty for very cheap. I bought this extended warranty right before my 4 year / 50k warranty expired on my 2007 RX.

With all the niggling defects, and I have a keen eye to spot any defects on my RX, it was monetarily practical to buy this extended warranty on my vehicle. I got the 8 year / 125K warranty.

You just give him a call and provide your vin number.

Lexuss07 Aug 2, 2020 07:59 AM

Roland,
I bought both my Lexus cars in NJ, and called Toby to get the extended warranty on my 2007 RX.
